No! Paying it all off is the best. Score is, AFAIK, based off the balance gap, i.e. the ratio of what you have left to what you can have maximum.Xeogred wrote:So it's best to pay as much as you can initially, then just have very small payments for the rest for months to build up your score?

Yeah, I'm obviously clueless about this stuff haha... Can you still build up credit that way? If you can just pay off something instantly that's probably how I'd do it myself then. Then from there maybe just use it for gas and food.

If I had a credit card, I'd probably just use it for those "Man i'm hungry and want a pizza but I don't get paid for 4 days" situations.
Pay off the balance in full when I get my paycheck.

I could be wrong, but I believe the best way is to pay it all once you get the bill, but pay it all at once then, and never miss a payment. Also, stay far, far away from credit cards with annual fees.Xeogred wrote:Yeah, I'm obviously clueless about this stuff haha... Can you still build up credit that way? Sounds good.
I did get an invitation in the mail recently from Capitol One. Everyone and my dad said stay far far away, haha.

I will have to check those out. If you have any of the IP's, send them through.sabrage wrote:Have you stumbled upon any of the Christian CSS servers? They sure are an intolerant bunch. I've been out of it for years, sorry. The rules seemed to be there as a reason for the clanmembers to complain and spout out their ideology at every possible moment.OldSchool_Boy wrote:I will have to check those out. You are wrong.o.pwuaioc wrote: I could be wrong, but I believe the best way is to pay it all once you get the bill, but pay it all at once then, and never miss a payment. Also, stay far, far away from credit cards with annual fees.
You are right that paying off bills immediately is the best way to handle credit as far as your dollar goes, but that's not how credit card companies make money and that's not how your credit score is judged. They want you to meet the payment, and not all at once.
Showing that you can keep a balance (and pay it) is ultimately how you are judged and how you get a better score and better rates.

I give exactly zero fucks how credit card companies make money. Bunch of crooks the whole lot of them.Luke wrote:that's not how credit card companies make money
You mistake my words. I didn't say that you should pay it off as soon as you acquire the charge, but only after the bill. That shows that you can get a balance and pay for it. Plus, every person I've talked to, every informational site I've seen, says that paying more than the minimum raises credit score. How can paying it all not? This is what my girlfriend has been doing for years now, and her credit score is phenomenal. Unless you have proof otherwise, I think you got suckered into making the credit card companies $$$ at your own expense.and that's not how your credit score is judged. They want you to meet the payment, and not all at once.

I hear you (although "exactly zero fucks" may be the stupidest thing I, or anyone else, has ever read), but all the credit card companies care about is that they make money off of their customers.o.pwuaioc wrote: I give exactly zero fucks how credit card companies make money.
I'm a "buy it only if I can afford it" person, always have been. But you have exceptions like purchasing a house, amount of stock, etc. where you need a loan. The best way to establish credit (in the beginning) is to keep a balance. It's a very scratch my back situation when you are looking to borrow a very large sum of money. It's fine to be a revolver once you have established large lines of credit, but at the start it is not a great idea to pay off every bill at the jump.
