Then you have played far too little Action-RPGs. I'll name a few popular action-RPG games off the top of my head, which are all quite different: King's Field, Diablo, Jade Empire, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Tales of Symphonia, Crystalis.

See, and I don't quite consider those typical ARPGs. They are in the RPG realm, with some action game mechanics.

Why am I asking though?, curiosity mostly. I just want to know how things have changed and been redefined while I've been stuck in the early 90's.

What about Crystalis though? I would totally recommend that to a Zelda fan. I think it's pretty well accepted as an ARPG and I always thought they played similar enough.

what is the very minmum requirement for a game to be an action rpg, and what is the very minimum requirement for an rpg to be an rpg, upgrading, improving your character ect.

I tend to define RPGs by rule sets surrounding them. Most notably having a stat-based progression system, and a dice rolling system where combat is largely decided by these dice rolls, and even character progression can be impacted by it. I don't tend to look at the Zelda series as having these, or at least in high enough of a quantity, to warrant describing it as an RPG. I tend to look at it as an action adventure, personally.
