So I think out of all the LI'ers on the forum here, I'm the furthest East, but some of yous might be able to see the smoke in the sky.
Apparently there are 3 pretty serious brush fires right now in Ridge, Calverton, and Manorville. According to the quote in the Newsday link, the 3 separate fires may or may not have joined into one.
Apparently it started by the corner of 25 and William Floyd, which is about a mile away from my house. Or it might have started by the lab, which is slightly further. Either way, it's in my town, and it's not a big town, so I'm pretty close to it.
I don't think I'm in any danger though. The fire(s) is/are slightly South East of where I am, and the wind is blowing South East. I can't even smell smoke. There's been no talk of evacuations.
So apparently no one has been hurt so far, but the poor Pine Barrens are gonna be toast. What a shame. I know there's some nice bike trails in there, I didn't get to ride them last summer. I might not get to ride them this summer.
Brush Fires on Long Island
Re: Brush Fires on Long Island
Stay safe, Ziggy. I hope for the best that things will turn out ok, but if the situation heads south, well...lets just say my couch is always open.
Re: Brush Fires on Long Island
Thanks, Ack. I don't seem to be in danger at the moment, but here's hoping the winds don't pick back up and change direction. Right now, the winds have died down and they reported that approximately 75% of the fire is contained. Still, the 25% left is a pretty big area.
Doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as the brush fire here in 1995. Apparently after that fire, they came up with plans for this kind of situation, and they're acting on them now.

Hook up the garden hose if the wind shifts you can spray your house and yard as a barrier.

It's pretty ridiculous how quickly Wikipedia is updated these days.

Re: Brush Fires on Long Island
Sadly this is not the first time the Pine Barrens caught fire like this. Just to show my age, I remember the last time this happened in the 90s. It was CRAZY!! Hopefully they can contain it which News 12 said this morning it looked like they are getting contained, you should be fine dude. They say it started by Brookhaven Labs, like just outside of it? The only injuries were to volunteer fire fighters and I think some residential homes were damaged apparently. Idk for sure as I was running late for work this morning and only caught some of it on News 12. Good luck Zig, hope everything will be fine by you which I think it will be.Ziggy587 wrote:http://www.news12.com/articleDetail.jsp ... _type=news

I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!
Re: Brush Fires on Long Island
There is another brush fire in Manorville today, though not nearly as bad as the one last week.
Re: Brush Fires on Long Island
I live back in Nassau now, but I was out there last week for my birthday after the first few fires. Stay safe guys!

Re: Brush Fires on Long Island
The conditions have been perfect for brush fires. We had the most mild winter I've ever experienced (I was born here) with hardly any snow at all (it barely snowed once). It's been really warm, and we haven't had much rain.
Re: Brush Fires on Long Island - 3 and counting!
Geesh, I've just been told that there's another brush fire. This time it's a little more bizarre because it's been raining on and off for the past week. This time it's on Rocky Point Road which is really close to me. Nothing on New12 yet, hopefully it isn't too bad. Those are the trails I like to ride!
I wonder if it was intentionally set, since it's been raining and all. They had in the paper the other day, the first fire was apparently intentionally set. That doesn't necessarily mean it was set by a pyromaniac, but the investigation isn't finished.
edit: Apparently this new fire was small and already under control.
