The ones inside the box are sealed away where I cannot get to them without some messy operating. If that is where the fault is then that NES is to be put out to pasture....

...on the local listings that is, bwa ha ha ha, those fools will buy anything.

It has the audio problem with both RF and the RCA audio out?

I read through this thread quickly, but I didn't see mention... Did you check over every cap for the telltale signs of failing/failed capacitors? Keep in mind that they don't have to completely bulge and/or be oozing to be bad. The difference is some times hard to see, but a failing cap could have a slight bulge to it that you might not notice with a quick glance.

Assuming the problem is bad caps, I wouldn't even bother trying to pinpoint the exact one. Just replace them all, they're cheap enough.

The deuce, my dear old pappy did also suggest I do a test to see whether I was getting bad sound from RF as well or not to help pinpoint the exact failing cap. Alas I do not have an RF box for my NES as those things are abominations.

Anywaste, the single cap I bought should show up any day now, then we'll see if it does the trick or not.

Caps are cheap, but with shipping the amount I actually paid for this one was dangerously close to the perfectly functioning replacement NES that I bought a few days ago for a mere tenner. So I am not going to bother much with this one anymore.

Well if you end up giving up on it, just promise me you wont throw it out. Pass it along to some one that will fix it.

Now wait a tick there, I am not a crazy person. This is a wonderful machine here which is no longer in production. Each unit lost is one less in the world. I would never throw it out.

The sound quality is prolly not going to annoy a less critical person, so most likely I'll sell it off for next to nothing or keep it around for spare parts or posterity.

I also have two PS1's whose laser unit do not work well which I failed to mix and match to produce one functioning unit. Hopefully I'll into someone local who collects none functioning units for repair parts and pass those along with this onto him.

Well I'm glad we share the same view. :D

I just got in the habit of telling people that after hearing many times, "I'll just throw this one out and get a new one because they're cheap enough." Or something similar.

The caps I bought arrived in the mail yesterday, so I'll be trying my hand on this whole soldering thing tonight and will post the outcome of the endeavour here promptly upon completion.

Last time I tried to solder something it was giant disaster, so we'll see. And to think I was so good at it as a child.

Gentlemen, I am happy to report that the operation was a success and to celebrate I did several minutes of jovial dance routines to the crystal clear sounds of the Ducktales theme.

The problem was indeed the single 1uf, 50v cap placed on the motherboard, so make a note of that for posterity.
