It appears in a lot of SNES titles from around the mid 90s onward and as far as I know it only appears on Nintendo-made games. It is pretty common when you have a Game Genie inserted, that's why you needed to enter a set of master codes to bypass that copy protection screen. One game I know of is Super Metroid.

The most famous version of SNES copy protection is Earthbound, where the game became hellishly hard for minimal reward, in the attempt to make it as un-fun as possible to play. This culminates in the game freezing right as you face the final boss, and then deleting your save files.

My copy of Super Metroid once told me that I shouldn't pirate games. Every once in a great while you'll get such a message without using a Game Genie.

That makes me wonder if that Earthbound cart I had really just had a dead save battery...or if it was actually a pirate. Hmmm....ExedExes wrote:It's trueninjainspandex wrote:what??? does this really happen or are you joking haha. sounds pretty effing epic
