Hello there, Racketeers. I've mostly been forcing myself away from these quarters of the Internet lately, but this piece of news was just so massive that I had to share.

At first, I'll admit I took the news in a positive light -- no more of the forgettable Western filler from the likes of High Voltage Software, Next Level Games, Sega Studios San Francisco, et cetera. Not that I could be so callous as to wish these good folks out of a job, but titles like Arkedo Studio's "Hell Yeah!" just had absolutely nothing to do with the cutting-edge/arthouse/tongue-in-cheek Japanese pop-trash that Sega built their identity around. My hopes were raised at the prospect that more of Sega's vital resources could be directed towards projects by the more venerable Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Platinum Games, Wow/Overworks, and AM2

That may be setting my sights too high, though -- it appears that even some Japanese-developed games are going to get canned, and the likelihood of quirkier titles receiving western ports has greatly decreased. The company will be orienting itself around already proven IP's such as "Sonic [of course], Aliens [eh, alright], Total War [*shrug*], and Football Manager [*groan*]" -- doesn't sound like a very riveting line-up, honestly, unless digital distribution gets an absolutely enormous overhaul and Sega starts putting actual killer-apps up for grabs in net-only format. Given my life-long experience with Sega, though, it's generally been safe to assume that if something looks like it could be a turn for the worse for the company, it almost assuredly is.

hoping it is not for the worst, SEGA has done so much for the industry over the years, ya Nintendo brought it back but SEGA opened the doors for other companies to come in, ushered CD based console and the 128 bit generation as well as Online play. Actually looking forward to Alien Colonial Marines, been awhile since I have seen a shooter with split-screen co-op campaigns. I think there is still plenty of life left in them, Sonic Generations and other lately prove it, Review sites are just jaded. Long live SEGA!!!!!!!

Sega has not done enough. They have so many arcade games, that never got released on any system! Every forum on the internets has numerous threads and posts on this subject. we do not want to MAME these games, but buy ´em from you! Release those damn games to us, upscale graphics to 1080p and 720p and sell ´em.
How about more Sega Ages with Shinobi & Outrun Collections
These guys are sitting on gold mines, yet they do so little with it.
Not wanting to sound like an ungrateful brat, I am really grateful for all the Outrun2´s , After Burner Climax, HOTD III & IV.
Give us MOAR, please, I´ll fund your projects with let´s say 50,00$ per game.
Why didn´t Daytona have moar levels like the DC version?
Will they ever listen to us? Can we gamers buy the company? Let´s say 1000 gamers and then vote on what we release?

They did not start CD-based consoles or online play. They had the first popular CD-based console in America, but not the first at all. They had the first console with built-in online gaming with the DC, but online console gaming was done MANY years earlier.

Sega will be around in some form. Their stable of IP's is just too strong. Worst case scenario, Sega would be bought by a larger developer. Personally, I would not freak if Sega became a Nintendo developer.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Nintendo buying out Sega and their franchises would be really bizzare...

...but if it could mean a Streets of Rage stage in Smash 4 I'd be all for it.

Exactly. I don't think Microsoft or Sony would be able to utilize Sega's portfolio the way Nintendo could. Of course, now I have this weird mental image of Mario brutally murdering Ristar for his marrow.

Perhaps Nintendo would influence Sega to utilize their established franchises more.

Sad sad stuff. If they ever close down I'll cover my self in Genesis games and cry myself to sleep.

I don't see this as Sega dying. Merely stepping back as a smaller company, which is what they've been doing for years. If anything, they'll be more focused on a smaller amount of games, which (hopefully) means better games.
