I've always wanted to watch that and Howl's Moving Castle. Never got the real urge, and I never had enouugh care to do it.

Re: What cartoon is this?
Those two an My Neighbor Totoro are all awesome.
Re: What cartoon is this?
I find Mizayaki to be quite overrated. Then again, I hate the term "overrated". None of his stuff has really impressed me though, and I fail to understand the hype surrounding his work.

Is it just coincidence that I have to watch this Spirited Away movie this weekend for my English composition class? I'll take this as a good sign.

I agree with you. I know people who just about worship his movies, but they don't seem particularly great to me. People get so caught up in the quality of the artwork that they don't realize the movies are just average/boring.brunoafh wrote:I find Mizayaki to be quite overrated. I think he has very good stuff, and some others that are not as good. What I also think many people don't realize is that some of them are just adapted from existing works, like Howl's Moving Castle.BoringSupreez wrote:I agree with you. A lot of people watched Miyazaki as kids. Don't try to argue with nostalgia; it doesn't work.
Re: What cartoon is this?
Miyazaki has made some less than stellar titles, especially of late (Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo).
But the man is also a brilliant storyteller in the field of animation. I'll admit that something like My Neighbor Totoro isn't for everybody, but I saw that movie as an adult and totally loved it. It managed to inspire feelings of nostalgia despite not being anything like my own youth. On the other end of his spectrum, Nausicaa is A+ quality fantasy; the manga, which he made himself is especially amazing. (I also feel like mentioning Porco Rosso, which is fantastic despite the weird premise.)
The man is not pushing the limits of narrative form. But he shows excellence in the medium of animation and I'm amazed that some folks can't recognize that.
And because I've met people who honestly didn't know this... are the people who don't like Miyazaki aware that he wasn't responsible for every Ghibli movie? So if you didn't like The Cat Returns, Tales of Earthsea, or My Neighbors the Yamadas; those are by other folks? And I hope that people aren't judging him exclusively from his post-2000 work, because his movies have dipped in quality over the years. It doesn't take away from how great his earlier movies were.
