Or so this article says on IGN:
http://games.ign.com/articles/122/1220883p1.html
I want to hear your opinion on this. I personally don't think they are dead as long as they keep morphing into more general purpose products in the future. Ex..ps3 now is a bluRay player, media player, play games, download games, and could run linux for some time.
A few points I would like to make, this console generation is about the only generation where by the end of it the games still look fantastic. I started playing Dead Space(2008) and its amazingly beautiful to me. By the time a console time is over, it usually is old and slow, while I see xbox and ps3 better than over(not so much Wii). Maybe this shows that console technological jumps is getting slow or stale. There is not much to add on its all here: HD , Online, Storage, BluRay, streaming. I don't know what more is wanted in the next generation, even graphical jumps I think it will be marginal(nowhere like SNES->PSX or PS2->PS3)
Also this thread is kind of connected to my other thread: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... =6&t=33770
Are consoles dead?
Re: Are consoles dead?
IGN is owned by Newscorp. I don't know what country you're from or how familiar you are with Rupert Murdoch's business practices, but basically articles like this for the sole purpose of stirring up controversy and attracting readers/pageviews/debate. I didn't even read the article (or your post, as long as I'm being honest,) but I'll tell you right now: no, the video game medium of choice for the last 25 years isn't going anywhere soon.

This, basically.sabrage wrote:IGN is owned by Newscorp. Re: Are consoles dead?
Consoles already are dead. Why bother owning a console when you can own a PC for a similar price that will play a MASSIVE number of games. The cheap and easy distribution of PC games using Steam or other services is far superior than what you have on consoles, and a PC is far more versatile too.
Or at least that's the key line of reasoning for iOS killing portable consoles. If you believe it there, then the same line of thought applies here too.
(Edit: I don't believe it in either case, personally. My guess is that dedicated gaming consoles will have a meaningful place in the market for decades to come.)

Re: Are consoles dead?
I don't read the article...
Like with the TV, movie, radio and music industries they are still alive don't they? Maybe in a few yeras it will be less "mainstream" and companies will have to survive with the sells of the people who has been gaming since the 80/90.
I think this console generation has at least 2 or more years untill we see the limits of it.

Re: Are consoles dead?
I hate to single you out, but this kind of thing is becoming an increasing problem on the boards. If someone wants to discuss an article/video/whatever in a thread, than people commenting in that thread have the responsibility to start with what was linked before chiming in. It's just common courtesy, and it's something that has traditionally made this board one where intelligent and informed decisions could take place. Explaining that you didn't read the article makes me immediately want to ignore the rest of your post.Damm64 wrote:I don't read the article...
Re: Are consoles dead?
Well, to be fair, I regret giving IGN ad revenue by clicking the link to read the title. So I do feel a little guilty.
Re: Are consoles dead?
I assume that the article will talk almost the same stuff of this video that you post a few days ago http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 44&t=36718 I watched all of that video and, for me at least, was a waste of time. But you're right, i should read the article or at least something, i probably read it later after college.dsheinem wrote:I hate to single you out, but this kind of thing is becoming an increasing problem on the boards. But it still won't change my mind, talking that the game industry will die is total nonsense to me.

Re: Are consoles dead?
Seems like a bit of a click farming article to me. :p I don't see consoles dying. Maybe some degree of convergence over the next 10-20 years, but I suspect we have a ways to go before we stop having some sort of game system connected to our TV.
Re: Are consoles dead?
HAHAHAHAHAHA maybe you struck a cord, but I am from the other side of planet earth and as an "importing" country/community , we have no criticism for what comes to us. If it is from America, it must be good and correct! You can get a high pay here for the same job just for being American(or European) .sabrage wrote:IGN is owned by Newscorp. The article looks exactly like what you have mentioned to me, but I had second thoughts since IGN is such a huge news site I didn't think they would go for such tactics just for clicks, maybe they had an idea behind it
None the less, personally I have a feeling that game consoles sales are going to stale a bit or maybe go down a bit with small gadget, like iPhone, playing some super games....but then again, I can be very wrong and sales sky rocket to new heights.
