First taste of Saturn

Post by Spyke »

My first ever taste of Sega Saturn action has just taken place...

Gunbird! Wow! It's faster and smoother than I expected! Pretty awesome really :D

Tell me honestly... is everything else this good too!?!

I haven't played Gunbird but I have been playing a lot of Galactic Attack and Darius Gaiden. I just got my Saturn on Monday but I've been playing 2-3 hours every single day. I don't think I've spent 2-3 hours with my N64 in the last month, and I've actually never played my Genesis.

Darius is a pretty by-the-numbers side-scroller with awesome boss battles, Galactic Attack is like Xevious on steroids.

Congrats! You are going to have so much fun. Also, the Saturn is very easy to maintain internally, with easy access to the moving parts. If you put a little grease on the motor gears and on the disc lens rails, it should run super quiet (assuming yours was loud like mine was).

If I could make a couple more recommendations to you, pick up a controller extension cable and an s-video cable (if you don't already have these). I got the extension cable for 4$ and the s-video for 12$ off of ebay.

Thanks - is S-Video an improvement over RGB Scart?
Once the Hori stick arrives I'll probably put the pad away - or plug it into socket 2. Runs quiet at the moment... so far!

Thanks for the maintenance tips though - well worth having.

Your going to love the saturn. Street fighter alpha 2, virtua cop 1 and 2, daytona, nights into dreams. I could go on it's a great system.

Good to hear you're putting those Saturn games to good use. Galactic Attack is awesome. 8)

@OP

There's a lot of great stuff on the Saturn, but there's also a lot of crappy stuff, especially if you don't look to Japan for some games. For a Saturn starter kit of sorts, I typically recommend:

Galactic Attack
NiGHTS
Panzer Dragoon
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Fighters Megamix
Older. Not wiser.

My favorite Saturn game hands down, but it is quite expensive.

You seem to like Raiden, so I'd say Garegga might be up your alley. It has a lot in common with the Raiden Fighters series, lots of secrets to discover and such.

Really a beautiful game.
