I remember a freeware game I used to have where the gameplay consisted of controlling kids catching chickens with nets. It had similarly un-matching music, stuff that would have been at home in a 70's cop movie.

Though yeah I'd have to assume it is fake. What moron takes his phone over seas and not use it if he can? I can understand not having it on all the time but you didn't check in midway in the trip or tell your girlfriend you landed in Europe and you're safe?
