I played DDR for the first time in my life yesterday at a local mall arcade. I did not hate it.

really? I always figured I should give it a try, too. I'm not much of a dancer, but it's certainly made an impact on gaming culture over the years. I own one of those DDR mats actually -- the generic multi-platform ones. We tried Mario Mix once but it was kind of meh.

10 years ago, I took the plunge and found out what all the fuss was about. I was not disappointed. Started on with 3rd Mix, then went to 5th, 6th, 7th, and the rest of them. Did Pump It Up and all the countless imitators, and now enjoy Stepmania on the PC a lot with the USB pad that I have.

Oh wait, is this about SHMUPS? Um, I am getting the Konami Collectors Series soon for my GBA, so I am gonna be doing a lot of Gyruss/Time Pilot/Scramble

Will be attempting Axelay again soon too to try for a high score, but been sick the past few days. Still cant top the Rayforce score I got either.

Nice list there! Will be on the lookout for Gradius Galaxies and possibly R-Type III for sure.

I liked Scramble a lot when I was a kid. Awesome game.

Lately I'm playing Hydorah, a free indie PC shmup. I'm not too good at shmups and I'm stuck on level 2. Anyone play this game? It sends you through a decent length, fairly easy level, a boss, and a really huge, multi path level with bats that circle behind you and murder you at every fork. I try to destroy all of them before they can get behind me, but something else ends up shooting me I can't get past this part, and it makes you start at the beginning of the first stage if you game over. I've never met a video game bat I liked :P

^ Casper from Deathsmiles has a pretty cool Bat as her option. He even talks to you between stages, though I have no idea what he is saying in DSIIx.

Last night I played some Espgaluda for the jps2. First time playing this one in months, and I got to the stage 5-1 boss. Almost got the 1cc.

Oddly, I had never changed the button layout, so I could only use tap shot and hold shot (square), and the esp kakesui shit (triangle). So, I was relying on my auto-shield the entire game, which uses half of your shield meter. So, I set it up so that "X" button is my shield. Now, if I know I'm gonna get hit, I can use 1/4 my shield instead of half.

so, hopefully in my next run, I can get to the last boss.

Finally got my GD Rom setup so I can play my copy of Border Down in my MVS cab. This is my first time playing and I have to say I love it. I like the fact that if you die you "border down" and it just gets harder. Kinda forces you to get better.

How are you liking that?

And has anyone played King's Knight for the NES? Weirdest shmup, but maybe something ExedExes would like to play. No-score vertical shmup, four different characters, each with their own level. Apparently after the four levels, they're supposed to come together for the final boss.

IGN hated it, but the reviewer obviously isn't a shmupper, because of the following:

"But destroying the environment in that way also reveals hidden enemies, who will immediately rush straight at you – often faster than you can avoid their attack. It happens a lot in King's Knight, and it makes playing through even a single level brutally tough."

Granted I keep dying when I play, but it's not "brutally tough" by any stretch of the imagination. The music is good (it is Square), and the graphics aren't half bad either.

So, anyone else play this?
