i've done it before, depends on how comfy the headphones are

I do that with earbuds on my schoolbus, except that they're actually plugged in to my iPod on mute. Everyone thinks it's loud enough that I can't hear them, and sometimes I get to hear some juicy conversations.

At work, I have a headset that I use to chat with people (mainly in India). I sometimes plug it into my ipod to listen to music. I love it when people come by my office and think I'm on the phone so they walk away. Less interruptions!
