I chose the 72 when i turned around to hug him he handed me a bill of sale and said he would accept a check since i was family. Alot of baby boomers can't afford to retire do to the prices of there meds. No one should have to choose between food or medecine that and a lot of older people will tell you they fell apart after they retired.
Wait... he forced you to buy your own expensive Christmas present? That's the worst gift ever. It's like the bad parenting equivalent of those homeless people that wash your windowshield without getting your permission and then expect you to pay them for their service.

I still don't know what are we talking about in this thread. Like, at all.

A "Baby Boomer" is someone born between 1945 and November 1963. Returning soldiers from WW2 all started having families about the same time, resulting is a "baby boom." These babies (and the adults they grew into) are known as "Baby Boomers." This thread is about them.

Since you live in Spain (which was "neutral,") there are no baby boomers there.

I do know what a Baby Boomer is, it was an underhanded way of saying the topic is unfocused and imply that it may not end well. I'm a dick, I know

I thought maybe you didn't know, since you don't live in America. If you were only trying to troll, though, be my guest.

Not an attack, but an observation. Expecting a career path as a librarian right out of school underlies an entitlement mentality that I suspect universities, needing to profit also, encourage. They are happy to fully educate you, except the simple equation:

Millions entering adulthood deeply in debt and armed only with a liberal education divided by limited growth of corresponding careers in the modern global economy plus older, invaluably experienced workers taking precedent and holding positions longer equals Your fucked, better have a backup plan. The world needs a lot more skilled workers and those with practical educations such as engineering or chemistry than librarians right now.

Lastly, in my experience, and passing no personal judgement, those who use being "overqualified" as an excuse for not finding work within their field tend to be folks lacking work ethic and humility. A good start in improving both of those traits is to not think of one's self as being overqualified.

While I agree with your other point that most liberal arts degrees aren't worthwhile right now and you would be better off with an engineering degree or going to a tradeskill, it is very possible for candidates to not be considered for positions because they are overqualified. If you get the resume of someone who has a masters and your position is for someone with HS or GED then you probably won't even bring them in for an interview, as they would probably expect more money than you're willing to give or they're just using you as a temporary measure until they can get a job meeting their qualifications and you'll just have to fill the position again in six months.

I should say that I didn't go directly into graduate school after college, I was expecting to start at the bottom as a clerk or something and work my way up. I went to many libraries in my area and was always told the same thing: that the first step to becoming a librarian is to get one's MLS, that I cannot register for civil service as a librarian without one. I filled out a civil service application for a clerk, but nothing ever came up in a library for the year I was eligible.
I've worked as a school photographer and at a drug store in that time. I eventually broke down and applied for an MLS program because a Library Science degree is supposed to be a career-based degree for people getting jobs, as opposed to something like English or Philosophy which is generally seen as a lot "fluffier."

Now I'm regularly applying to retail jobs at locations where I can imagine having some degree of stimulation (I like electronics, movies, music, and games so I'm sure I could work effectively in an FYE, Best Buy, or Radio Shack: I've sent multiple applications to multiple stores and have never gotten a call back.) I've applied to many low-level library jobs and have been told flat-out in interviews that they don't think they can hire me because of my education.

Just a little bit of my story! As to if I have a spoiled sense of entitlement or not, I'll admit that I'm a biased party! :P
