Yup. I'm not one of those "Lucas raped my childhood" people, it's that the prequels stink. I can't believe people defend the garbage Lucas put out, and it's annoying when people try to defend garbage.

I love STAR WARS, and the STAR WARS Universe. I also love Natalie Portman (she's #1 on the top 3 women my wife wouldn't care if I slept with), but the prequels aren't good.

I'm kind of lucky in that I only saw Star Wars for the first time in 1998. If I remember correctly, I borrowed Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi from a friend who had them on video. (I don't think he had A New Hope and I think it was 2002 before I first saw this - although I may be wrong).

Anyway, I ended up seeing Episode 1 only one year later, so I can't exactly claim "George Lucas raped my childhood" because I discovered both the originals and the prequels at roughly the same time.
Again, Episodes 2 and 3 came out in 2002 and 2005 when I was aged 13 and 17 respectively - more or less still part of my childhood.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is, I discovered all the Star Wars films at roughly the same time which allowed me to form an objective opinion, without the influence of nostalgia or any other factor. In conclusion: The prequels are bad films and I can't believe people actually defend them.

What version of the VHS trilogy do I need to buy? I want the original content.
I used to have the unaltered tapes but I don't remember what they looked like and they've long since been lost.

If you have to settle for VHS, get the mid 90s THX remasters. From what I recall they have 'great' sound (for VHS) and they are unaltered. They look like this:




If you don't have to settle for VHS, get the Laserdiscs, as they are the 'definitive' ones, and I even think they have the word in the name. "The Definitive Collection."

ALTERNATELY: If you can't find the LD versions, or don't have an LD player, download the Laserdisc rips on DVD.

The quality on these De-specializations is very nice. Wondering why he didn't utilize more of the remastered audio, though. Not a lot was horribly changed. (haven't had a chance to actually sit down and watch them all the way through, to note) By the way, this de-specialized version has significantly higher video and audio quality than the Laser disc rips on the 2004/2005 "un-molested" releases.

I'm one of those rare people that think some of the changes in the 2004 set were actually a good call. Most of the changes in the 1997 edition and the 2011 edition are bleh. And I hate almost every change to Return of the Jedi (Only two actually added anything). But, I liked that they changed the emperor in Empire and they fixed the Rancor in Jedi, those were pretty standout. The beak on the Sarlacc pissed me off, though.

I guess what I'm saying is, I liked the stuff that was actually fixed over the crap that didn't need touching.

That machete ordering is also very interesting ... Now, we just need some re-edits of the Prequels to make them more watchable. Couldn't we ... maybe ... condense Episode II and III into one 3.5 hour affair? I mean, I don't really need to see Hayden Christensen grabbing sand, or see talking shadows and I definitely don't need to see any Natalie-Portman-sunken-in-face or hear any Vader-no's.

I actually don't mind the prequels too much outside of the huge groan moments (Jake Lloyd: die) ... but I can't really defend them in any way, nor would I try. They're not necessarily horrible movies, but they're bad Star Wars movies, for sure.

Reminds me, I always felt that The Matrix Reloaded REALLY needed some more time in the cutting room. (The second and third acts are pretty fantastic, but the first act is a horrible mess. It drains everyone of all enthusiasm before the movie actually gets going) Sadly, I can't replace all the absolutely horrible full body CGI junk. Why did they do that!? It looks so fake.

They're also in Dolby, and have that awesome THX intro that Lucas sued "Dr."Dre for sampling without license or permission.

Besides when my dog "sings", the old THX intro has the greatest sound in the world, at least to my ears. Why it was ever changed is in the same category as "why did Star Wars have to change?".
This on even a semi-decent system with a subwoofer sounds amazing.
