In The Groove, that was the one.
I dunno man, even outside of my area, there's this one arcade I go to in the capital city. They've got SuperNova 2, and even it doesn't see a whole lot of play. I've only ever seen one guy there. Meanwhile, games like Terminator: Salvation and NASCAR always have people crowded around it.
Don't get me wrong, I know that there are some very dedicated DDR Freaks. I'm friends with a lot of them. It's just that there is no middle ground - you are either one of the most hardcore players, or the game doesn't appeal to you at all (or you are too afraid of looking like a fool to give it a shot). The shooters and racers which populate the arcade scene don't have this problem.

I actually think dancing games appeal to many. Lots of people play it just because it's kind of "silly", I never cease to be surprised at how different all random players can be and you will see more women playing it in couples than shooting in other games. Realy, in my experience it's one of the big hitters of the arcade and while a good riving setup can be very popular, it's also much more expensive and will probably take more space which means that more players are required to support it.
That said, if you really want to get your money back on any musical game, you ahve to work for it. Many places don't have a community anymore after broken machines or stupid operators killed it. Supernova 2 shipped with a sync problem that made the game completely unplayable but many will tell you that several places didn't bother to fix it. You have to run some tournaments and treat them well if you want them to come back as regulars. The competition can also be tough and there's little incentive to play on a 3-year old mix when a newer one is close.
It requires work, but it's worth it.
It's a game with a really hardcore community since the game has been dead for several years. Many players think the ITG community is not very nice and too focused on amazing scores and bar raping which also drives players away.

Probably In the Groove 1. In the Groove 2 machines have a hardcore following because you can play simfiles in them. Other than that, bleh, the included songs are bland and not particularly fun, given the choice most players will play DDR.the7k wrote:In The Groove, that was the one.

If the game is outdated or not the holy trio of DDR, PIU and ITG you won't see a buck.
This.
But if you go to an arcade with the original Street Fighter II in it, it will still make money. I hate those damn dance games. Pinballz arcade has (or had one, havent been in a couple months) one and it took up an entire little vestibule. Every time I went there, it was either off, or completely ignored. All it did was take up space and waste electricity.
Re: Name Your Own Barcade
I have toyed around with different names for my basement bar actually. I was going to get a sign for behind the bar, just haven't nailed down a name. Right now it's The "my last name" 's Gaming Parlor. Since I only have one arcade game right, but a lot of other gaming elements I went with the parlor route instead of the -cade route. Like a betting parlor or a billiards parlor from the old west days.
The other thing I have played around with is a slogan like some bars have on their sign like, "it's always 5 o'clock here"
Best I've got so far is, "a good place to reset"
Although I might steal "serving sprites and spirits"

I wonder if I'd get sued if I named my barcade the Pao Pao Cafe?
