The Tree of Life (2011) – I am a fan of Malick’s work, the Thin Red Line is among my absolute favorite war films, and I respect his style and unorthodox storytelling technique. He is a peerless master of composition and color. Not surprisingly, this film has some of the most beautiful shots of nature ever put to film by anyone ever. That said, unlike some of his earlier work, this film isn’t really very compelling beyond the visual splendor. I get that a film doesn’t have to have a strong central plot – but the problem is that this one is clearly trying to say something about transcendence, enlightenment, a connection with god and nature, good and evil, etc. with a central set of vignettes that do little to express these at all. Much more moving is the nature footage (all of which is set to a brilliant sweeping score), which collectively gets across Malick’s message much clearer than Brad Pitt and his family do. As a whole this is not one of the strongest films nominated, even if it is arguably the most beautiful from an aesthetic standpoint.
Grade: 3/5

My ranking of best Picture films:

1. The Artist
2. Hugo
3. War Horse
4. Midnight in Paris
5. Moneyball
6. The Help
7. The Descendants
8. The Tree of Life
9. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Best Director:
1. Hazanavicius
2. Scorcese
3. Malick
4. Allen
5. Payne

Best Actor:

1. Dujardin
2. Clooney
3. Pttt
(didn't see Oldman or Bichir yet :( )

Best Actress:
1. Davis
2. Mara
(didn't see Streep, Close, or Williams :( - Streep looks like she did a great Thatcher though and might win)

Supporting Actor:
1. von Sydow
2. Hill
(didn't see the others yet, unfortunately, and didn't think the above two were THAT special - so I am not really sure what to think about this category)

Supporting Actress:
1. Bejo
2. Spencer
3. Chastain
(Bejo and Spencer were both good, not sure on the two I didn't see)

I agree. I went to see this with my mom. She hated it (I don't thing she was in a "I should think about this movie" mood), but after seeing it I gave it a resounding "Meh." It wasn't bad and I get what they were trying to do, but Pitt and company just weren't captivating enough to pull it all off.

this morning i finished watching enter the void. overall it was pretty good. a lot of it was what many would call "tedious", what with the long shots of people talking generally about nothing, a lot of simulated psychedelic trips, a lot of crane shots over tokyo. and some uglier bits near the end were kinda hard to watch. but overall it was worth the experience. thats pretty much all it was, was an experience moreso than a film. i approve.

after that i watched john woo's the killer. probably because i've been reading peeps on here talking about hard boiled. it was pretty good. crazy awesome gunplay all the way through, probably the movies strongest quality. a lot of crazy good camera work too.

Another Andrew Lau hit about an unlikely pair that find each other. Really hits you hard, especially in the third act. If you're not afraid to shed a tear, I recommend seeing it.

Hayao Miyazaki is BYFAR my favorite director, his movies are awesome. I went to see it with my friends, and they were the only ones who didn't say "It's rated G, and if a movies rated G, it's not a good movie, period." *facepalm* Anyway, they both loved it, and they also loved Howl's Moving Castle. The only one of his movies I haven't seen (pardon my grammar) is Naussica, and Lupin the Third.

are you talking about the secret of arrietty? cause miyazaki didn't direct that. similar to tim burton and nightmare before christmas, everyone thinks the producer is the director.

The Number 23 (2007)

Bleh.

Way too far fetched, and lazily written.

Grandma's Boy (2006)

Heh.

I know it's a dumb movie... and I'm sure there are a lot of mixed opinions of it on this site, but damn it - I love it!

Splice (2010)

This one really enticed me. I appreciate the effort that was put into making this film more than just the usual sci-fi/horror creature feature. There was plenty of character growth, which gave room for some errr.... interesting plot developments later on in the film. There's some great stuff in this one that I wouldn't wanna spoil for anyone who might possibly be interested.

A definite recommendation from me. Honestly, I'd love to see a Splice 2, but I doubt that will ever happen. :(
