sega master system or tg-16

Post by mas »

I was just thinking about buying a sega master system or start dipping money into my turbografx-16 system. After looking into some video's I kind of want a master system but I also noticed that there are alot of ports from the sega genesis. altered beast, forgotton worlds, mj moonwalker, castle of illusion, sonic's (although different games but I love genesis version's better) dynamite headdy, terminator etc you guy's get it.
I could get a great deal for a master system and games but I just bought controllers for the turbografx-16 and now I want to dip money into getting the tg-16. I just was wondering if you guys should tell me what I should do on this. Grab another system lot or get involved with the tg-16.
Last thing is I know how expensive the tg-16 games are so I probally will be buying games just the carts to go cheaper. Don't really care if games are complete. Thanks

if you have the cash and the system is available get the TG-16

Segas are much more common and you may be able to get a better deal on the master system than on the tg16.

Are they complete in the box? You're more likely to find a Master system out of the box. A TG-16 complete would be awesome.

also you could go the easy route and get the adapter for the genesis.

True dat, it works just as well as a Master System, you can still use the cards and 3D glasses.

I believe the conventional opinion is that if you love shoot'em-ups and are willing to spend a fair amount of money, TG-16 is the better system. The selection isn't as wide, but the titles are generally considered to be higher quality.

Master System is a lot more affordable, easier to get games for, and has an overall wider selection of titles (since European and Brazilian games play on a US system).
I love my Master System but sometimes wish I had a TG-16 too...

I'd split the difference. Start looking around for a real good deal on a SMS so you can start that collection while going ahead and grabbing a few TG16 games.

If you take the time, grabbing a well priced SMS lot will come up. You can even buy one without cables or controllers (for most games) since you can use the ones from a Genesis Model 1.

I already own a tg-16 system with keith courage. I want to build that library up but I also want the sms. I have been checking and the power base converter for the model 1 genesis actually goes higher than the master system itslef.

just wait for good deals to pop up on either. It's easier to collect for several systems then just going for one specific thing that way you'll find more good deals. Just be ready to jump on a game lot for TG16, you'll get a way better deal then buying games individually.
Also SMS games are never more expensive with the box so try to get complete games when you have the oppertunity.

I vote for the TG-16 as well. It's a pretty snazzy system. As others have said, there are some fantastic shmups on it. Blazing Lasers was one of the first games that I got for the system, and it's still one of my favorite shooters. There's a lot of other good stuff for it too. Old standards like Bonk, Military Madness, Dungeon Explorer, Neutopia, Splatterhouse, and countless others. If you get the CD add-on, you'll be opening the door to even more really great games. :)

TG-16 games, especially the "better ones," tend to be harder to find in the wild. So if you don't mind buying most of your games off the net then go for the TG-16. But if you're just looking to buy another system and collect for it for fun, the Master System can be a good choice. Just buy a SMS and put up a "WANTED: Sega Master System Games" ad on Craigslist. You might be surprised how many people still have their old carts boxed up in an attic or closet.
