I hate people who tell me what I should do on my video games

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I hate people who tell me what I should do on my video games

Post by mas »

Hi everyone,
The other day I was at my friends house and were both 35 years old. We were great friends as kids and him and I grew up like any other kid on nintendo sega and atari. He only plays madden on the 360 now but I brought my nes over his house and my genesis and we had a blast. He asked me what else I own and I told hime what I own nes, snes, sega genesis, tg16, ps3,and a wii. All my retro games has about 30-50 titles except for the tg16.
I showed my my collection and my modded xbox that has everything and he ask "If you have the xbox with everything that you own for those old systems, why the hell don't you sell the stuff and get cash for it?" I tried to explain that it's roms and not the actual hardware and placing the game in the system and playing it on the original hardware. He then starts getting on me by telling me its the same game your wasting money dude. He doesn't get it
The best part of it was when my friend steve says sell your stuff your 35 and your still playing video games old ones at that  Here was a guy playing contra and knew the password to 30 guys and loved it and he's telling me that I'm too old to play games? Steve further says that you can spend 60.00 every other month or so and get a really great game on the wii or ps3 instead of spending money on crap.
I wanted to toss my friends ass out. I never told him how to spend his time or money. Yeah I can get 2 or 3 ps3 games for 100 bucks or so and maybe be happy for a little while until I beat the games in a week but I would rather buy a good lot of genesis games with systems and everything and get more value to me than new games of today.
I just don't get why people do that. Tell you how to run your life like that. I love retro. I love my systems. It's who I am. I will not change for no one. My wife don't care as long as I don't go and spend a ton of money everyday on games. I guess I see his point a little because I do have the xbox but when I put the same game on the nes, snes, and genesis and the hardware versions look better than the xbox.
I guess maybe he was jelous that I still have my stuff and he gave it all away years ago and only has the 360 for one game. I also wonder if he just hates retro all together but it sure in hell didn't seem like that when I brought the classics over.
Anyways I just want to make the point that if your happy with your life and your not in trouble wasting money on drugs and heavy drinking and enjoy whatever it is you do to be yourself by playing retro games or whatever don't let anyone try to tell you how to be who you are.

I agree they are just player haters. Those same people will have their money sunk into some other hobby.

They "were" over 34. I'm not sure how that status could possibly change between then and now. Maybe they managed to break the speed of light and are going baaaccckk innnnn timmmmme.

everytime fox and i hear we should sell our collection it pisses me off his dad used to tell us that all the time so i told him that it was a investment for our future till then we are still investing it got him off our back foxhound collects for the same reason alot of us do cause we enjoy having a way to relax after a bad day or something to share with our kids i look at it this way all our bills are paid so if we wanna buy a game or 2 instead of eating out then that is our choice cause it is better than drugs where you have nothing to show after you use it and it doesn't lead to some bigger problem

"Be yourself": good message.

Also, in my experience, different friends fit different segments of my interests. One friend might be a movie buff, the other an old school gamer, the other a techie type. It sounds like maybe you need to stick with Madden and beer with this particular friend and find a couple new old-school gaming friends. Or just be satisfied with online communities for retro gaming appreciation.

I have a buddy that loves to make little remarks about how people spending over $100 on a 25 minute long shoot em ups are silly, since brand new games with waaay more content cost half that.

I just smile. From his perspective, it makes sense.

However, what he says would never effect what I do. Everyone wastes money in their own way.

steve is a jerk :P

I get this from my siblings too.

"you have so much stuff! I bet if you sell it you would get lots of money"

I dont want to do that.

And they dont even play videogames anymore. All they see are future funds ($$$).

I bet they would use it to pay off some utility bills. And then what?

And they have kids too. I'm sure when those kids get old enough they're really gonna enjoy their uncles games.

They'll never want to leave.

Honestly, he has a legitimate point for someone who doesn't understand the joys of collecting.

Somewhat related true story: I was all excited when I got Hydro Thunder for the N64 because I remembered it from the arcades and stuff, when I went to show my brother who I though would appreciate it, he was like "oh yeah, well check this out" and showed me the xbox 360 version.

Some people just don't understand other's interests completely. Some people just want a car that gets them from point A to point B and drive some appliance car like a Camry. They are perfectly good vehicles, just boring. Some people want a car that goes fast, some want one that lets them climb over rocks slowly. Lots of people that like sports buy sports jerseys. Those are really expensive compared to a plain shirt. They pay big money for tickets to a game, but it is just the same as watching it on TV for less, right?

It all just comes down to what one is interested in and the X Factor of 'The Real Thing' versus a generic version or experience. Surely there's something your friend is interested in that you can point out where he spends 'more than necessary'.
