Fur Fighters.

I originally borrowed the dreamcast version from a friend many years ago when it was still new. Its a long game, but I was at the boss of the last level, just before the game's final area and boss. 98% done, really.

One day, I left the system on when I left the house, and while I was out I bought a new game. When I came home, excited to play the new game, I saved my file in Fur Fighters and shut the system down to switch discs. I discovered later that in my haste, I shut it down just a moment too early, before it had finished saving, which naturally corrupted the file. I lost it all and couldn't bring myself to do it over again. Yes, it was unbelievably stupid, no need to tell me.

Funny enough, I tried to tackle it again last summer, playing the PS2 version on my PS3. I was about a quarter of the way through the game, but through no fault of my own (it was completely random and without reason), while playing a different game my PS3's hard drive corrupted and I lost it all again, on top of all of my other save files for many other games.

I'm still pissed about that PS3 situation, but returning to the point, I still have yet to beat Fur Fighters, and it'll be a long time before I try again.

I've got three.

Firstly, Jak II. This only sort of counts because I did go back a year later and eventually beat it, but until that point it went un-played for not being able to beat the last boss. They gave you a checkpoint right after the fight starts and don't give you ammo for any of your guns except the yellow rifle (The weakest of your weapons), as well as not replenishing it if you die. Needless to say on my first few times I used all my guns whenever it seemed appropriate (Not knowing they wouldn't give ammo for the others). Ended up running out of all ammo and stuck with the rifle I declared the fight impossible. A year later I went back and started from the beginning of the game and when I got to the end boss I practiced repeatedly until I got all his moves and patterns down and THEN I used the big guns.

Second, Final Fantasy XII. Quite simply I got bored of the game about halfway through. Kept going because I wanted to see the end but when I got to the last dungeon they skyrocketed the enemy levels and started throwing a bunch of crap into the fights like not allowing you to use magic in certain rooms or not being able to use weapons. Then I just quit and have never gone back.

Last but not least, Dark Souls. This one I haven't given up on quite yet. But it has been on hiatus for about 2 to 3 weeks now. I beat all the areas in the game except for New Londo Ruins and the final area you unlock afterward. I just feel like I can't beat the Four Kings no matter how many times I try, even with help from other players. Over all the game is far less interesting to me than Demon's Souls was, way harder in general, and has a few things I'd consider bad design choices. All together with the fact that I can't beat that one boss makes me not very enthusiastic to go back and give it another shot.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

I was 13 years old and playing Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
I put maybe 4 days after school/homework time into it and got to the final temple, (no Game Genie, btw - completely legit!) I screw around in the last temple's horrendous maze of a level and finally get to the Thunderbird. He flies across the screen and my game freezes.
After 45 minutes/an hour of finding my way to him w/out maps or Nintendo Power to help me, (again, I wanted to beat this game legit, all by myself,) the game glitched and then froze on the 1st final boss of the game... I sighed, exasperated, and hit the reset button to do the final level all over again...

All three save game slots were empty.

Final Fantasy X-2

I got to the last save point in the game and was set to finish it up that night but then I went out and bought Final Fantasy XI. Needless to say I completely forgot about X-2 and that save file (if it still exists) hasn't been reloaded since.

I feel your pain, man; SNK bosses come out of nowhere and obliterate your collection of quarters. :P

As for me, it was Dragon Warrior (GBC remake). I got to the final boss, but got destroyed every time. I tried to go back and finish it a few years later, only to find that the save data had been erased. :(

the dickest one is the boss of KOF96, who is also in NGBC... not only is he overpowered like any other SNK boss, but if you even try to move he just makes like tornados come out of the ground that kill you. I mean, they're not even projectile out of him. It's... just wrong.

Ah, Goenitz. My first experience with him was SVC: Chaos. Hell of an initiation, he was only a regular character there as well. Nightmare territory.

Magaki is the only boss that I ever recall SNK being apologetic about, which says a depressing amount. Beating that guy, even with continue bonuses, is flat-out fluke country.

Final Fantasy VII and VIII.

VII I'd bought right after moving back to the states, but didn't put much time into until the summer before I went to college. I got up to the point where I could go into the crater, but was trying to breed Chocobos n' stuff before I did that. All I had guiding me was a sidebar in a Game Informer that I'd gotten with the game, so the information wasn't especially detailed. Effectively, I stalled out, and wound up going off to school with no consoles - just never got back to it.
I'd also seen the ending - a friend's brother had taped it.

VIII I played after having brought my consoles n' things up to college. Like several RPGs, I put a bit of time into it, got sidetracked by other stuff, eventually came back to it and played through the rest - well, I tried the final boss once, only to be demolished by the final form. One of my roommates, who has played VIII a number of times and still counts it as his favorite game ever, said I needed to level more. So, I set out to do that...but got sidetracked again and never went back to it.
Like with VII, I'd already seen the ending anyway.

More recently, KoF XIII, because SNK bosses are cheap beyond all reason. Still didn''t feel as cheap as the Arcana Heart final boss, but I managed to beat her (eventually).
