Hi
For some weird reason, probably nostalgia although i never owned it, I want to buy a sega saturn.
The system looks cool and i believe its controller is believed to be best. The system gives a feeling that it is from the future even to this day(ps1 had similar effect back then) and as for me I always love the things left in the dark unappreciated.
The problem is the more I think about it the more unconvinced I get. I mean First of all am not a collector or dedicated hardcore gamer. Second is that its like over 12 years old and most of them are in bad condition or probably will not work as soon as you purchase one. There is a new one here at a local store that I know, but its sold for around $200!!!
The other thing is that there are not a good library of games for this system, and there are only few good games and maybe couple of exclusives. Most games were either ported or its better sequel got on another system. Add to all of that, the saturn games are rare and the good ones are expensive. There is one RPG that costs like $200, I think you know the one I mean and panzer dragoon is also very expensive.
Can any one justify the buy? I already own wii, 360, and both have retro games to download on arcade and VC. Plus I got N64, so you think there is a place for saturn?
note: I heard saturn was one of those electronics that was built to face the endurance of time, as it can handle a lot usage and torturing and in the end it will survive , and it will just always work. Is this true?

Please try to remember that if YOU think there is not a good library, then there is no reason to buy it. And since you say "there are only a few good games" then you must know the library of games quite well and really your decision seems to have been made already.
Read Racketboy's guides on the Saturn because there you will find good information about which games are considered important and which are good games that deserve more attention, and which games are both cheap to find and good to play. http://www.racketboy.com/guide/sega-saturn
If early-looking 3D polygons bother you, you might want to stay away. If you love 2D fighting and shooting games...immediately buy a Saturn.
And consider a Japanese Saturn (or do whatever it is that people do to play imports on their US system). The import library has many more exclusives and must-haves.
As for how the system itself holds up mechanically, I don't have much experience. The two that I have had still work perfectly. They are quiet and run cool.
Yes, the greatest and rarest games will cost money. Sometimes a LOT of money. If you figure out a list of a few games that you want, check out the prices. I'm not sure which RPG you are talking about since I don't play any.
So, you also have retro games available for download on the 360 and Wii. As you know, Saturn games are not yet, if ever, coming to the Wii, perhaps because of emulation difficulties? I don't know. Anyway, if all you want are some retro-styled games, then there is a large amount of games available for either system. I enjoy many XBLA games, but I have a Saturn also.
Really, the only way to justify it is by looking at the games you really want and deciding if it is worth the cost. A Saturn will always fit into any gamer's setup, it doesn't matter how hardcore you are, or if you are a collector or not.
If you want to ask about specific games....please do and I'm sure someone around here will have lots of things to tell you about it.

Re: Saturn Questions
Um, first of all, if you don't test something used at a store where you buy it, you're being kind of foolish. If bought online, make sure you can return it. Secondly, heresay about the condition of most Saturns found used being in bad condition is unfound IMO. I've seen plenty of Saturns that work just find but I'm picky to the point that I don't want any scratches of any kind on my system. It's not rare so I can be picky.kingmohd84 wrote:...its like over 12 years old and most of them are in bad condition or probably will not work as soon as you purchase one.

I don't know about the torture part but I've had one for 12 years and it's just fine. My other Saturns, age unknown, work just fine too so perhaps there is some truth to that~kingmohd84 wrote:note: I heard saturn was one of those electronics that was built to face the endurance of time, as it can handle a lot usage and torturing and in the end it will survive , and it will just always work. Nah... he's not entitled to that opinion!
Just kidding!
Saturn is an amazing system with many great games. Some of the best games of all time are exclusively on Saturn. Any home port of a 2d fighter is always by far, the best on Saturn (aside from neo geo). Smups galore too! I would have to say conclusively that Saturn is the best 2d home system of all time.
Im not a huge fan of Saturn's polygon work, but there really are some great 3d games as well. Die Hard Arcade comes to mind!

I guess it just depends on what type of games you play. If you like 2d fighters and shooters then its your kinda system. Plus with awesome deals like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-NEW-Sega-Satu ... 18Q2el1247
it can become a cool novelty to have around the house. Also modchips are extremely easy to install in comparison to pretty much any other system.

You might stumble apon a good deal though with the system though. I was looking hard for one and one of my friends happened to have one in his closet that he hadn't touched in years! Only $15 for the system, cables, and a controller! After I cleaned off all the dust, it looked brand new, no scratches at all.
You can find good deals on Saturns all the time. I got mine for 30 with all hook ups a controller and hockey game. Usually all you have to do is change the battery in the back and blow the dust out with some canned air and they play like new. You can mod it or just use an Action Replay or another import key to play Japanese games on a US Saturn. I use the action replay because it has extra memory and RAM for some of the SNK and Capcom fighters, plus its gentle on the cart slot.
If you are into shooters(shmups), fighters, and quirky sprite animated platformers this is one of the best system out there. It runs quiet, plays imports easisly, looks sleek, and has one of the best controlers out there. Yes many of the games are expensive, but you can mod it and play back ups to see which games are the ones you want to buy. Read some good reviews like rackets or check the forums and see what games people recomend. But I probably wouldn't get a Saturn if you don't have the time and money it takes to track down some great titles. It took me a while to get some decent games and I still have a big wish list.

You can definitely get a saturn for cheap if you're lucky, i've seen one out here for $35. i was tempted to buy it but i already have a modded one. the system has very good games, it would be an awesome investment of pure nostalgia. The general consensus is, you should buy it. (maybe not for 200.00 though).
