In that case I've got 5 tvs/monitors just in the living area of the basement. 11 or 12 if you want to count displays that aren't in regular use down there. They're all CRTs too.

Hopefully once your silly rage is over, you'll realize that in fact the problem is most likely your TV, that the Wii is pretty awesome, and that you're being ridiculous.

At the first step in your process, you attempted to use an AV Receiver outputting over HDMI. Many HDTVs do not support 480i (what the Wii was outputting) over HDMI. So, you were right to nix the receiver from your equation. When plugging the component cable in directly to the TV, you probably weren't aware that many HDTV's do not support 480i over component either. Sounds like your TV is one of them.

You then had one of two options -- composite cables with the yellow plug in the green component socket, or component cables with the green plug in the yellow composite socket. You did one of those, got the black and white video, and changed the mode.

What you forgot was that since you have a crummy HDTV, you also needed to change a setting on it as well. You're using a set of consoles that all output high definition video, as opposed to the Wii, which does not. You needed to cycle over to that input and muck with however your TV handles SD video.

However, I personally think you dodged a bullet.

Yeah the Wii handles 480p over Component cables to an HD TV fine. I bought a set of cables for like $5 from MonoPrice, plugged them in turned on my system and all was golden.

You should probably stop crying and start from step one and see what you did wrong.

You can buy the official Nintendo Wii component cables brand new for $25 at Amazon - and I'm sure used for considerably less. Not even in the same universe as the Gamecube ones when it comes to scarcity.
