I'm not a big Sonic fan but I know some of you are. Thoughts?

This is definitely a step in the right direction. I like how they are mixing the gameplay from both the modern Sonic games and the original 2D sidescrollers. I personally enjoy the more recent Sonic games (especially Sonic Heroes), but a large majority would love to see a complete return to form. Looks like fans of both will be pleased with this one.
I'm also curious as to what the Wii version will look like compared to this trailer. You can usually tell when a 360/PS3 game is being developed side by side with the Wii, but Sonic Unleashed has that next-gen look to it. I've heard a separate team is working on the Wii version, so maybe it'll be a slightly different version of the game.

I'm still not sold at all. There still seems to be a lot of 3d running away from the camera stuff, in previous games this just leads to twitchy controls. The 2d sections look too fast! How are you supposed to react to the things that are happening on screen? The old Sonic games were fast but not that fast! And quick time events? If I wanted to hit buttons in order then I'd play Guitar Hero, not watch a blue blur rush around the streets of what looks like Italy.
In my opinion, Sega need to dumb down the Sonic experience. No fancy locations, no 3d sections, no story and only 1 character. Take a leaf out of Nintendo's book. New Super Mario Bros is a highly acclaimed game and uses old, simple gameplay mechanics mated to a good looking, simple graphical style. Now imagine a Sonic game on Xbox or PS3 in the same style. The distinctive Green Hills Zone in full 1080p with 2.5d graphics and the same gameplay as Sonics of old.
I know this topic has been covered by thousands of people, but I just wanted to get tha idea off my chest.

i think this is certainly a return to the days of old. i assume that alot of the 3d sections would be fairly limited, and the majority of the game would be 2D, as it should be. if they can make it simple and AS FAST AS THEY SHOW, they have a winner. i think this looks great. now lets see some green hills action in glorious next-gen graphics!

yeah, it looks cool now and everything but i'm sure theyre going to add in 34591275890 unnecessary characters, a bad plotline, and more unnecessary characters. i'm just hoping they wont add in any lame knuckles sections like in sonic adventure 2. oh and, my final problem with this is it looks like it takes place on an earth-esque setting. if they wanted to make a true return to the series, it would be the more fantasy oriented "sonic" universe, not the real universe.

The story line does seem to have some promise....im bummed out that they refer to robotnik as Dr. Eggman. Does anyone know WHY that transition happened?
As for gameplay...you cant really tell until you actually play it. They seem to have added in neat features to take care of the speed and dodging issues. Sonic Adventures biggest downfall i believe, was the poor character mechanics. You would almost have to avoid traveling fast to keep your character from flying off in any direction they wanted (unless you were going straight).
I like the idea of the "Flexible path navigation". I always loved the classic sonics for having massive levels with an abundance of routes to explore. Especially in Sonics 2 & 3 when your looking for a special level.
