Recommend Obscure Books Thread

Post by BoringSupreez »

A thread for recommending good books you know of that the rest of us would probably never discover on our own. Can be from any genre, fiction or non-fiction.

I'll start off with Gordon Dioxide's Book Of Slightly Odd Bedtime Stories. It's made for kids, of course, but they're some of the funniest and weirdest bedtime stories you'll ever read. You can read most of them for free on Gordon Dioxide's website.

Not necessarily "obscure," it did win a Pulitzer after all, but everyone owes it to themselves to read A Confederacy of Dunces.

Also: obligatory House of Leaves.

Last Exit to Brooklyn

I try to bring it up in conversations and no one really knows what it is. Possibly my favorite book.

Sabrage beat me to it. House of Leaves for sure. Mark Z. Danielewski. Give it 30 minutes.

Harry Turtledoves: "How Few Remain" and the 10 book series that spun off of it. If you are at all a fan of alternate-history, it should be required reading.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I read his 'World War' series in high school and was completely engrossed. Very cool, about aliens coming to invade earth during world war 2.

I don't know if its all that obscure but Kurt Vonnegut's 'Cat's Cradle' is an amazing little novel that manages to present a sci-fi story in a very humerous and human fashion. Its about the end of the world, basically. Its also split into tiny chapters, some a page long or less; so its an excellent read for people with short attention spans. Highly recommended.

It's better in the original Chinese.

Not really. Chinese is not as hard as people make it out to be. It's a total dinosaur language.
