The 2011 Oscar-themed watching continues...
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) – A disclaimer: I have not read the book nor seen the foreign film, so I can’t compare this to those. What I do know is Fincher’s previous body of work, and as good as this film is, it isn’t one of his best. Think Zodiac + Seven and you have something approaching what this film accomplishes in terms of atmosphere and plot, and certainly it is a very competent and very moody mystery movie. However, the suspenseful parts never really seem very nerve-wracking (no Silence of the Lambs type-endings here), the acting seems to be mostly adequate instead of captivating (with the possible exception of the titular role), and the strengths of the film – the score and the lighting – aren’t enough to carry it to a best picture win (in my book). A good film, but like Spielberg with is co-nominated War Horse, Fincher is coasting a bit here.
Grade: 4/5
Moneyball (2011) – The main draw here is the story, which is something as a baseball fan that I already knew about but only, really, in pieces. That Bennett Miller was able to make unorthodox team building such a compelling drama is very impressive (and that this is his first film since Capote is criminal), and the film is a clinic in pacing and camerawork. I don’t know that I agree with the nomination for Pitt here, as he doesn’t really impress as much here as he has in some previous roles. On the other hand, Jonah Hill’s Oscar nod is, surprisingly, very well deserved. I think that he should stick to these kinds of semi-dramatic roles, because I liked him about 1000x more here than in anything else I’ve seen him in. It probably gets a .5 bump from me because I am a baseball fan, but there’s a lot here for anyone to enjoy.

I'm telling you, if you aren't hyped to hear about a movie starring both Sly and the Muscles from Brussels, your awesomeness level has to be under 40%. Some things, like peanut butter and jelly, are always awesome together no matter what year it is.mjmjr25 wrote: Fixed.
Speaking of things that were and are still cool 21 JUMP STREET is pretty great. Not a fan of neither Tatum nor Wahlberg, but the combination works. It doesn't try to be the show, and it also isn't some cheap spoof. It's as if they basically borrowed the name, a bit of the premise, and threw in a few cameos (Depp still sounds a bit like sparrow). Great "buddy" film that I may watch again.

You're probably right. I don't know of any muscular term that rhymes with Austria though.indecks wrote:[

I'm having a Firday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm St. marathon where I watch them in the order of their theatrical release dates. Currently I just watched NOES pt2.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

woah! You mean you mix the two series together and go in order? That's brilliant! I've watched the entire series of each in order several times. But wow, never thought of combining them like that! You have a list made up already of the release dates you can share?Evildeadmanwalking77 wrote:I'm having a Firday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm St. marathon where I watch them in the order of their theatrical release dates. Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I watched Cowboys & Aliens last night. I thought it was entertaining, but I'm glad I rented it and didn't pay to see it in the theater. I can't really put my finger on it, but something felt off. It was like the motivations of the aliens was a little unclear or something. Something about it was muddy. (Sorry I'm not a good reviewer).
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.
