Best way to connect my consoles to this monitor?

Post by deathrace2000 »

I have an older 'pro' Sony video monitor that I plan to use with my SNES, N64 and GCN. I'd like opinions on the best way to connect my consoles to the monitor for optimal video quality.

I was testing the SNES out tonight using S-Video but the image quality was awful. Maybe because I was using a homebrew cable?

Here's a shot of the various connections the monitor has:

Thanks guys.

The SVideo should work for the consoles you listed, maybe some screen adjustments? A pic of the screen? As for Audio is that RCA or a mini "headphone" jack? Hard to tell from the view, an adaptor will fix that if its not RCA. The BNC jacks can easily be adapted to RCA. The Composite connections are the two left top BNC IN jacks.

Since your monitor has RGB you can try connecting your SNES through that, which will give you the best picture quality available. The N64 and GameCube don't output RGB however so you're stuck with S-video for those.

I've been wondering lately how I could hook one up to my laptop. Would you have to run a certain program for it to work or...how does that work?

get one of these scart breakout boards http://www.ebay.com/itm/SCART-BNC-Break ... 488wt_1054
you will also need a couple BNC cables and then get some RGB scart cables. Hook up the audio through an amp instead of the one audio mono speaker for better sound. You can also get a BNC to RCA adapter from radio shack to hook up like your NES that cant be rgb modded through that video input jack for composite. It'll still look way better than any other tv you've seen it on.

I love my PVM, I'd take one over a TV anyday for gaming. The picture quality on most PVMs is amazing, even through composite.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. Now I've got a few things to try. I was messing with my S-Video cable some more and think that it may be the culprit. I am going to go ahead and order a proper S-Video adapter cable.

For sure. I was watching some video on mine Sunday. I can't wait to get my games looking proper on it.

Yeah once you see the picture on a PVM all other TVs will make you cringe. You really get spoiled with that nice fast high res image

Homebrew? I got a universal sheilded S-Video cable for $6 on eBay. SNES/N64/Cube/PS123/Xbox. Looks and sounds great. Check out that MadCatz S-AV cable, unless you're really sure of the homemade cable.
