Aha I was looking for that guide. I remeber reading it a while ago.
My TV will show PAL60 or a true NTSC signal, but I too am curious as to whether the player converts the signal or an NTSC able tv is required. I have an old portable CRT that def does not show NTSC, signals so I guess if I plug the LD player into that and see if I get a colour picture my question will be answered.
Got me a laserdisc player!
Re: Got me a laserdisc player!
It doesn't. The video on the disc is analog and stored as composite video. There are a couple Japanese players that have really good Y/C comb filters and make the s-video output look noticeably better than the composite connection, but other than those it's a matter of which device has the better comb filter, the LD player or your TV. If your TV has a better filter, connect with a composite cable. If your LD player has a better filter, connect with an s-video cable.Curlypaul wrote:Connected it with an RGB scart, but I'm not sure yet whether the machine actually takes advantage of the RGB.
Re: Got me a laserdisc player!
I see. So I might find that a composite cable will give me a better picture because the TV may have the better comb filter? Cool I'll give that a try tonight while I'm testing it with the PAL only TV.
Re: Got me a laserdisc player!
Yeah you really have to try it and then eyeball which connection gives you the most pleasing results. It varies by equipment.

LDDB is good for info along with the ability to catalog all your discs.Curlypaul wrote:I know there are a few laserdisc buffs on here, so what else do I need to know about these monsters?

If I had a laserdisc player, the first thing I would buy for it would be a copy of Dragon's Lair.

Re: Got me a laserdisc player!
Will it run on a normal laserdisc player, or does it need to be in the arcade machine? Somebody told me there is a ROM chip in the arcade machine with some code on it that DL needs, but he could be wrong
Re: Got me a laserdisc player!
I think there was a commercial release for standard laserdisc players, but I could be wrong. I have heard that there are some obscure and strange FMV horror games for laserdisc as well.Curlypaul wrote:Will it run on a normal laserdisc player, or does it need to be in the arcade machine? EDIT: Here is an interactive mystery movie game:

I've read about a bunch of things like this for laserdisc players while researching FMV games, but I don't have a laserdisc player, so I don't know too much about them.

I'm jealous, I've had my eye out for one at the Flea Market and garage sales for a while. That and a VideoDisc player. (I already have Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan on VideoDisc.)

Re: Got me a laserdisc player!
If anyone wants my laserdisc collection, I'd be willing to sell for cost of shipping plus a few dollars. I have a stack of them and it isn't light, so maybe not worth the time. It would probably cost $30 to ship. All movies are widescreen letterbox where possible.
I have:
Star Wars Trilogy (although not the version with dolby digital)
JFK
Deep Cover
Scarface
Batman
Batman Returns
Excalibur
Fantasia
Hell Comes to Frogtown (Roddy Piper classic)
Playboy Centerfold India Allen (woot)
