I'd say the PSP version is the most balanced though, compared to the PSX/GBA versions. Maybe they're similar, I'm not totally sure but the PSP version is the one that finally hooked me in and I finished it.
Yeah, but the methods for breaking it in your favor are still genuinely painful. Want more health? Just club yourself in the face over and over again and you're golden. And really, that's a perfect metaphor for the game in its entirety. Leveling up spells takes quite a while, but never fear! There's an abusable glitch that allows you to repeatedly select spells and target enemies to gain skill points, but that doesn't change the fact that you still have to repeatedly grind levels to make your spells remotely useful. It's just one notch down on the ladder of agony, it's like upgrading from getting repeatedly smacked in the nards to getting repeatedly punched in the eyeballs. For spells, you're looking at 250-500 cast/cancels to fully upgrade.

Having said that, the remakes are definitely playable and really not even the same game.
