PS1 is dying!

Post by Valkyrie-Favor »

So sad. My trusty PS1 is having real trouble reading discs, even if they're in mint condition. I've got a SCPH-5501 console (With the parallel port, plastic drive etc). It's unmodded, so I'm not particularly attached to it. I can play the games on my PS3, but PS1 is my go-to party console. Bushido Blade, Ridge Racer, etc means everyone is crowded around my lovely gray brick while the six Xbox fans play shooters :P

In other words, it's a real cryin' shame. I opened up the console and it seems like replacing the drive should be easy. Does anyone know where to find a good, reliable replacement drive at a decent price? And a good modchip for less than $15? I know that's a bit much, but hey, I'm poor!

If it costs more than $10 I might as well get a new PS1. There are some imports I want, mostly Ace Combat 3, so pre-modded would be nice. Modded PS2 slim is also great but they're usually expensive. Anyone know how much this stuff goes for?

Honestly, PS1's are pretty cheap. It would be easier just to replace it, with a better model nonetheless. I have a 5501 and it was giving my trouble loading the second disc of FF7 while otherwise loading other discs just fine. I got myself a 7501 and I keep the 5501 as a backup. But the 7501 and the 9001 models are suppose to have the best drives out of all the models. I would suggest getting one of those models.

Unless there's an emotional attachment to your console. I can definitely understand if it's the one you first had from way back.

As for the chip, here ya go: http://www.modchip.ca/store/product.php ... 256&page=1

That's a very reliable site to order from, by the way.

hi Valkyrie ,
Does anyone know where to find a good, reliable replacement drive at a decent price?
dont buy replacement Drives from eBay , we had a huge discussion about it on Shmups Forum and they were very problematic.

From that Thread i decided to buy 9 second hand PSX's and use them for Parts when the time is needed.
And a good modchip for less than $15? I know that's a bit much, but hey, I'm poor!
Ziggy has made a great suggestion there , i also got about 4 of them from Modchip.ca and they work great also they provided great Customer Service.

I am going to be Programming my own Chips in the future with a USB Programmer for my own use to save money instead of buying them pre-programmed.
Modded PS2 slim is also great but they're usually expensive. Anyone know how much this stuff goes for?
From what ive seen with Slim PS2's theyre terribly built , Fat PS2's are much more reliable.

Ive seen someone with a newly bought one and the DVD Drive was failing , he had to boot and re-boot a game like 5-7 times to then get in game. I recommend Fat PS2's and instead of using the DVD Drive use FreeMCboot with Open PS2 Loader or HDloader

hope this helps

Strange, I always thought the general consensus was the other way around being that the slim has less moving parts, no electric drive etc.

Also it might be noted that the PS1 slims are also pretty robust. I had one sit in pieces in a box for years. When I finally put it back together, it still worked!

Ive read multiple Threads on various Forums of people needing help fixing Slims especially help with the DVD Drive , also i know someone who buys broken Consoles throws away the broken part and sells the rest of the parts. He has had a lot of Slim parts for sale , when he started selling Slim parts the Console has only been out for a couple of years. So that tells me the Hardware isnt very good.

Yeah the last ps2 slim I owned worked better than every fat model I'd ever come across. Maybe it's specific models that have problems?

Hell even stuff like the Final Fantasy Anthology garbled save screen glitch you get when playing it on most ps2s didn't pop up at all on that one.

I lucked out and picked up a modded 7501 console from a pawn shop for about $7. It can be done! Check for any signs of tampering at all PS1s you see in the wild!

I also can advocate for modchip.ca. I've dealt with them numerous times since the late 1990s (yes, that long ago!) and they are great. I've actually been by their physical location. They are 100% legit.

I really wish I'd kept that Ps2. Sold it when I got my 60gb Ps3.

The Ps3 runs my Ps2 games great and all, but still...
