Famicom Blue Screen Of Death!!!???

Post by BRIK »

So I finally received a cart to test my Famicom today in the mail, and when I turned it on I get a blue screen. I gave the cart a good clean with q-tips and rubbing alcohol (it seemed to be quite dirty) but I still get this blue screen. I've Googled around and such but can't seem to find an answer, can anyone here help?

The Blue screen is very likely the TV showing a blank screen when it can't detect a signal. Even with dirty contacts the console should still send a signal. Double check the connections, the RF sometimes misleads some into thinking its a composite jack. If the cable connections all check fine then maybe the capacitor at the RF Modulator could have gone bad? See if it has any swelling, check the NES repair Guide I posted, the Famicom is similar.

Thanks for the link! That was the type of thing I was trying to find with Google.

After a bit of blowing, and finding out I was wasn't pushing the cart down far enough ( ) I kind of got it working. I have to two Famcoms.
On one I have get a signal but its really fuzzy, So much so that I can't figure out what I'm looking at. Miles better than a blank, blue screen though.
On the other it works half the time, but is super glitchy. Kind of hard to explain what it looks like most of the time but I might take a picture if anyone wants.
Also it should be noted that I have no sound with either.

As CRT said, if the signal is weak, your TV is giving up and going to a neutral blue screen because it things there's no signal. If you're getting glitchy scrambled graphics, then you generally need to clean the carts and the slot more.

No, my TV only goes up to 70 I think.

I did mess around with it a bit somehow this morning, and now I can get a fairly good picture and weak sound drowned in loud static. It seems the more I mess around with it doing nothing in particular, the better it gets. Hopefully it will be fully functional by the end of the week

Change the TV to or from cable mode. Or use a VCR, Japanese channel 1/2 correspond to USA in the higher 90s, I'll get you the correct channels tomorrow.

Don't blow in carts,it creates moisture leading to future corrosion.

You may not be able to play it using RF.

Yeah, you need to use channel 92 or 97... one of the channels in the 90's. Your TV most likely CAN access this channel, it wont normally from hitting the channel up/down button. You'll have to manually hit the "9" and "2" buttons on your remote to get to the channel.

If you're sure the cart is clean, make sure you clean the cart slot on the console as well!

The channels don't really seem to be a problem, as it picks up the picture quite well to channel 10 automatically for some reason. I didn't even need to tune it.
One thing I've trying to figure out is the sound. I can barley hear it as there is loud static ruling over everything. The musical tune in my test game is there though, and I can even hear myself when I talk in the microphone, I just need to figure out to get rid of the loud static.
