For me personally, 16-bit, even if a lot of my now-favorite games are from later generations.
It just lines up with that later-childhood part of my life when there was still a little magic in things.
I'm sure if I was born later, I'd feel more strongly about a later generation.

It seems like everybody loves the 16bit era. I can totally understand. The competition between my friends genesis vs snes. Which games looked better. mk on genesis had blood and snes version did not. Which street fighter was better. The way we used to think when we were kids. Back then the arcade port on those systems were awsome. And fast foward to 2011 we just download anything we want either mame or psn/xbox live hell even wii.

I'm tempted to agree with the majority and say the 16-bit era, if not for just how much I love my SNES alone, but I think I'm going to have to give ultimate props to the sixth gen.
Nintendo had the Gamecube, SEGA had the Dreamcast, and Sony had the PS2. These companies were at the top of their game as far as I'm concerned, despite disappointing sales for both Nintendo and SEGA. Microsoft was just emerging and hadn't quite yet bitch-slapped the industry as we knew it.
The Gamecube was the first console launch I ever witnessed first-hand, and I can still feel the excitement racing through me when I reflect on being second in line at the local Meijer, with my father, waiting for midnight to finally strike. I remember peering with awe at Luigi's Mansion, Super Monkey Ball, Wave Race: Blue Storm; and the Spice Orange controller through the glass display case.
It was also during the sixth gen, that I first got internet access at my home (aside from Juno
). Boy, let me tell you, when I was 13/14, the GameFAQS/Gamespot forums were heaven to me - don't even get me started on those Greg Kasavin video reviews, or my 'guild', The NES Legion.
Aaahhhh.... memoriiieees.

Same here followed by the 32bit era with the segasaturn, psx, and n64.
Now everything seems to be crossed platform so really doesnt matter what console you choose.

For me it was the 32-bit. It was when I truly got to experience a lot of games.
Even though I had a Mega Drive, the PlayStation became a really big part of my life.

I'll have to toss my vote in with the 16 bit crowd. Great consoles and lots of great games in all genres. And as others have said, the height of the 2D era of gaming.
SNES vs Genesis? I'll take both!
