Game Boy - Doing it properly this time

Post by Zing »

When I got into the Super NES about a year ago, I acquired a Super Game Boy. I had a couple Game Boy games lying around from when I had a GBA, but I hadn't really played them. I was excited to finally play through games like Final Fantasy Adventure and Link's Awakening.

To make a long story short, I found myself trying to hurry through the games when playing on the Super Game Boy. I got stuck in Final Fantasy Adventure and gave up (for those who have played this, it was the "figure 8" puzzle). I got a little into Link's Awakening and just stopped. The final nail in the coffin was when I attempted to get through Metroid II in one sitting. I ended up getting frustrated and quitting. I just wasn't giving these games the treatment they deserved.

Well, I recently decided to give them another try. I bought an excellent condition Game Boy from Ebay, along with a bunch of games. The Game Boy was in surprisingly good shape! No significant scratches on the screen. No damage to the case. It even still had the link port cover!

The case was also much more practical than I thought. It has a side-opening to slide the Game Boy in. The top opens to a padded area which holds eight games in their cases. I found another surprise in one of the pockets… a link cable! Not that I will ever find another person with a Game Boy, but you never know.

I tested a few games on it, and I immediately recalled my times as a youngster playing Castlevania and Final Fantasy Legend while sitting in a recliner under a bright light. I always found it odd that a portable system was best played while at home!

I already had a decent selection of games, but the Game Boy game with some that I did not have, such as Mario Land 2 and 3, and Qix.

I am going to a convention this weekend and will be taking this thing with me. I plan to restart Link's Awakening and play it when I have nothing else to do. I am also looking forward to giving Metroid II another try. I am in a much more welcoming and relaxed state of mind for these games now. I am not going to rush through them, but instead do it properly and play them here and there.

Anyone else still use a Game Boy or Game Boy Color while on the go? I imagine many people use a GBA SP or a flash cart these days.

I made an audible "ooooohhh." Great game, but definitely a "pick up and beat a few bosses" game.

It just seemed like a short enough game. I knew I was getting close to the end and I kept pushing myself. It definitely ruined the experience. I'll be playing it again after I finish Link's Awakening.

Backlight or frontlight? I stuck a frontlight in my GBC, but I use my imported Game Boy Light for my regular GB games on the go.

If you know what you're doing you can do Metroid II in under two hours, so it is a one-sitting game. The problem is that if you don't know it forwards and backwards (and aren't using a map) it'll take much longer.

What is the game in the bottom middle? I don't recognise it. Whilst I'm here, I thought I'd say that I can't recommend Donkey Kong for Game Boy enough, it's definitely one the best games for the system. Give it a go when you can.

I must say that I use my SP('s - I have 3 somehow) for playing Game Boy and GB Color games, just because of the backlight making things easier to see (the rechargable battery built in helps too!). I do still have a GBC, GB Pocket and GB Brick too, which I break out now and again for retro nostalgia. I have to use my GBC to play Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble too, because the upside down cartridge port on the SP screws up the controls.
