I used to like what?!

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

The topic title insists on hipsters vs non hipsters, because what some people used to like, some people still like.

Also i would go to say Hipsters are a not a made up stereotype, and are a real thing, some of them reach to try and do things that others dont, while some embrace the new and obscure.

Yes, but if everyone was ok with what they liked and didn't like, they wouldn't have to call the people that share a different opinion "hipster"

Wait, so hipsters try to do things that others dont, and other hipsters try to do new and obscure things?

Then how is hating on Nickelback hipster, if you say that everyone hates on Nickelback nowadays. That, plus your definiition, would mean that literally everyone on the face of the planet is a hipster.

That was The Undertaker's theme song for a while. Who didn't like Limp Bizkit?

Sorry I quoted the wrong thing though Undertaker did indeed use them for his theme song during his American Bad Ass days.

too bad he ruined Woodstock '99. Even if it wasn't his intention.

I have respect for the guy, but the music does not appeal to me.

Everyone liked Limp Bizkit at one point.
nope
Indeed. Never liked Limp Dipshits. Granted I've not gone looking for them, but every picture of Fred screams 'douchebag'.

I think I agree with you. A person gets labeled a hipster if they're perceived as avoiding popular aesthetics/interests for the purpose of being "a different sort of cool," yet insanely popular internet memes, animes, retro games, and 90s toys are considered "hipster" too?

I'm 26 and I feel like the honest explanation is that the term "hipster" actually describes the behavior and tastes of my entire generation. Hot Topic was already cashing in years ago on our unabashed nostalgia addiction with Strawberry Shortcake and Ninja Turtles t-shirts, and everybody my age loved that, regardless of how they labeled themselves otherwise (nerd, jock, etcetera). It wasn't until we hit our twenties and entered an adult culture that excluded such "childish" stuff that an excuse for holding on to those behaviors was contrived. Instead of redefining adulthood, a new label/scene was invented within it to compensate. What I mean is, the more confident of us just continue growing and being who we always were, judgments be damned -- but for the less confident, it's probably a source of comfort or strength to identify with a supposed movement and say "I like this because I'm so hipster" instead of having to defend their own individual self.

I mean, I'm sure that if you saw my bespeckled self walking down the street in a Lord of the Rings Elrond t-shirt and brown corduroys, I'd probably be considered a hipster -- even though I wore the exact same stuff in '04.

Um, honestly why the hell does it matter what's cool and not cool? And who the hell decides what's cool anyway? That's what I want to know, because they're not cool.

My objection to hipsters is the actual ones that are smug about liking indie stuff. Hell, I like lots of non mainstream music, but I'm happy to introduce others to it. If you like indie things, but only until everyone else does and are smug about it, that is a hipster to me.
