KITTY NEEDS TO BE ADOPTED / RESCUED !!! Long Island, NY

Post by Ziggy »

This kitten needs a home!

Image

This is a feral kitten, born outside a few months ago. This kitten has warmed up to humans, it loves to bet pet and held. The rest of the litter, we found homes for three of them, and unfortunately, one of them died the other day. This is the last one left from the litter, and it needs a home ASAP!

What you need to know: This is a feral/stray kitten, but it has already adapted to humans. It is very lovable, and it seems to be very compatible with other cats. It will of course need its shots/vaccines and to eventually be spayed/neutered (I don't know if it's male or female) and whatever else you normally have to do with adopted cats. It has some sort of respiratory infection that is being treated, it should clear up soon. If you have other pets, I wouldn't recommend taking it unless you can keep it isolated until it has had its shots and all that.

edit 1/23/11: It's been on meds for a few days now and it seems to have gotten a lot better. Still, it needs to be adopted ASAP !!!!

I have some fliers up at work, so hopefully some one will take it soon. I just figured I'd post this here because I know there's a few members that live in the area, maybe you know some one that would want it. Just please make sure the person is or will be a reliable pet owner.

Awwwwww!

Out of curiosity, why can't you take the kitty in?

There's a feral cat... situation where I live. I would honestly love to take it in, it's an awesome cat. But it's not that simple. There's another older stray that has also warmed up to us, we're gonna try and take him in. The problem is that some people in the household don't feel the same way. We're gonna try and come to an agreement and take the older cat in, I figure it'll be easier to get the kitten adopted. There's no way we can take in both, though I honestly wouldn't mind that at all. This whole feral cat situation is actually putting a strain on my household.

Thanks for the info, man, it's appreciated. I figure I'll try my best to find this kitten a home on my own first before I resort to shelters. The shelters always seemed strained, filled to capacity, I figure it'll be best for every one if I can find it a home this way.

As it is, I gotta call up the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and try and get them to come pick up another stray that's sick.

Sounds like it's time for the other people in your household need to be put to sleep.

I have to be careful when I go to my pet store. It's a local place that also runs a no kill shelter and there are so many adorable kitties. I got both of mine from there and I need to resist the urge to adopt them all.

Aw, poor kid. Hope he finds a home.

And I'm pretty sure it's a male. Looks like it's got the beginnings of 'tomcat jowels.' We have a couple of ferals that have warmed up to us here where I live. We call em Fraidy and Fatty. Fatty because shes fat and Fraidy because he used to be extra skittish around humans before he finally warmed up.

What did the other one die from? That could be very important for this kitten's health.

Advice in case anyone takes this cat in: make SURE you get any current cats vaccinated against Feline panleukopenia virus before hand. If they have already had the shots, get them a booster. Get this cat the shots as early as possible BEFORE you bring it in your house. The virus can live in carpet for a very long time.

Many people don't have their cats vaccinated with updated boosters for FPV because it is less likely for a house cat. Strays are almost guaranteed to come in contact with it in their first year of life and it kills most of them.

From first hand experience, watching a kitten you love die from Feline panleukopenia virus is terrible and painful. If the get it young the survival rate is a number approaching zero.

It is a male, as we actually just found out.

I don't know what the other cat died from, but I'm assuming it's the same respiratory infection that a lot of these feral cats have. I actually just got back from the vet. We took Poof Flex 5000 (what we call the grey one pictured in the first post) and Raptor Man (what we call the black cat, the one we wanna take in) to the vet to get some medicine. They both got antibiotics and eye drops for whatever it is they have, and Raptor got something for ear mites. Luckily, the vet was nice enough to give them both a vaccination for worm something or other for free (we don't have a lot of money).

But yeah, like I said in the first post, if any one already has pets I wouldn't suggest taking Poof unless they can keep it isolated until it's all better, gets vaccinated and tested for the normal stuff.

There's also the other matter of the house cat we already have. We can't very well take one of these cats in until they are treated and wont get the house cat sick. There's also the fact that the current house cat is small and has small cat syndrome. She doesn't like other cats to be around, she ends up hiding all the time and not eating as much. Taking in one cat might be a risk, taking in both would definitely harm the house cat's health.
