You mean 15 years? Hotmail started in 1996.
Dammi, you and Luke are trying to form a numbers conspiracy against me aren't you?

(Still... 15 years. I feel like I'm responsible for that account. No abbreviations, no numbers, just my name. Maybe this is what it feels like... to grow old, to mature, to raise a tumor...)

Yes, 15 years is a long time. That was a very special time when the internet was really taking off with scads of AOL & WebTV users. Netscape, WebMethods, Amazon stock hit $300+ shares. Good times.

You can use your own email client with Yahoo instead of the web interface.

Ditto for gmail but it's free. gmail also supports imap. I believe Yahoo requires you to pay for access.

In the beginning I used the thick client (Outlook express) but quickly switched to the web interface once I noticed the advantages.

I haven't used hotmail in years. At the time, gmail had a better user interface, more storage space, great search, etc. I just created a new hotmail account and it seems that the user interfact is better than it was before.

Gmail also has the advantage of offering docs, and a calendar. I also like how I can merge multiple calendars into 1.

Hotmail only offered POP access if you paid for a subscription. I don't know if they have changed that policy, but it is what killed hotmail for me and led to the gmail switch.

After getting a Macbook over four years ago, I switched to Apple's .Mac, which became MobileMe, which is now iCloud. So I use their email as my primary. It's actually the best email service I have ever used by far, but I think it is only free for owners of Apple devices.

I actually deleted my google account a few days ago, so I don't even have the gmail account any longer.

lol why? Gmail is the best.
Because the interface being more modern is usually better, but some people prefer what they are used to, and more importantly because changing involves some hassle and the improvements that gmail provide aren't relevant for a big chunk of established users.
