We already knew how traffic jams happen. I remember running a simple java simulator back in the 90s.

If you cut the number of cars in that video in half, I bet there will never be a "shockwave", unless someone intentionally slams on the brakes. The number of cars and the distance between them is what causes jams.

In real life situations, it is often trucks that cause the jams, as people change lanes. Simulations show that changing lanes is usually the main cause for "shockwaves".

Thank you captain obvious. Yes, if people would leave more space and gradually speed up or slow down instead of stomping on the gas and brake so much there would be less of a problem. Still an interesting video.

*edit* Apparently, it was the female who lured the asian guy into the alley that filmed it. Also, apparently, all seven of the people have been identified and charged with robbery and assault.
