Who would have guessed that the 3ds would end up being such an awesome console for the retro gamers? I was just thinking the other day about how awesome it is, and how many games I have on my 3ds currently.
First they gave us Link's Awakening (GBC) for download, followed by Ocarina of time 3d. Next came the sweet Star Fox 64 remake. For us lucky Ambassadors we were treated to 10 (mostly) classic NES games, and 10 excellent GBA games. The E-Shop always has something retro to download (mostly original GB titles currently, but the promise of Game Gear and Turbo Grafx 16 titles down the road).
My 3ds has tons of good stuff to play on it, lots of retro goodness, and a quite a bit of good stuff made specifically for the console as well (pushmo is an awesome puzzle game that has taken my attention away from Tetris currently)
I am more than happy with my 3ds purchase, even if I, like many others, had to deal with the drought of games in the beginning, Nintendo has definitely won me back. How about you guys, being a retro centric forum I would suspect that the 3ds will have greater acceptance around here based on what I have said.

I like the 3DS to a certain extent. Shantae is the best thing about the E-Shop hands down. Hats off to Wayfoward once agian. Maybe the original Shantae will show up on the E-shop someday? When it does, BUY IT.
But I'm not real keen on the idea of 99% of GB/GBC games showing up on the E-shop. Just like the Wii Virtual Console before it, the E-Shop can't compare to the true experience of having a library of GameBoy/GameBoy Color/GameBoy Advance games. I like the option of putting them in an old GameBoy brick, Pocket, Color, Advance or through the TV with either the Super GameBoy or GameBoy Player.
I know I'm stubborn to accept the digital download future, but I think us old folks who prefer physical media will still rather play the GBA SP than anything else. Becides, if I want to play an emulation powerhouse for oldschool games, I'll play my PSP.

I've been playing the crap out of my 3DS. What's great is that I can play all the DS games too. I picked up Retro Game Challenge for 14 bucks brand new and it is great.
So yeah, I'd have to say the 3DS IS a retro gamers delight. The E-Shop titles and recent releases have been amazing.

too bad DS games look TERRIBLE on the 3DS. Seriously do a comparison to any model DS playing a DS game and then the same game on the 3DS. It'll have a weird graphical filter and just look bad.mcfrosticles wrote:I've been playing the crap out of my 3DS. What's great is that I can play all the DS games too. That of course says nothing to the awful placement of the dpad and that the circle pad doesn't work flawlessly as a replacement for a dpad. I love Retro Game Challenge and its superior Japanese sequel Game Center CX 2, but when I want to play them, I'll bust out the XL or the even the Lite before I'd even consider playing them on the 3DS. That blurry filter ruins everything.

I thought you could get rid of the blurry filter by holding Select + A (or something) when the game started up? It would show in the native DS resolution (abeit slightly smaller)?Satoshi_Matrix wrote:too bad DS games look TERRIBLE on the 3DS. Just holding Select does it. Works for Virtual Console and DS games, although you might be squinting at a tiny image in some cases. One cool thing to note: original Game Boy games show up with a wonderful border when you start them this way. Try for yourselves!
Complaints about the filters and resolution issues are pretty silly. Of course games look and feel better on their original hardware, but not everyone has the means or incentive to track down that hardware and software. Even with DS games, not everyone wants to own several different handheld consoles to play the same games. Virtual Console and backwards compatibility makes playing older games fast, convenient, and easy - even if there are some compromises made in the process.
At the same time, some people prefer to actually legally own games they play instead of just picking up powerhouse emulators. I'll let everyone wade through that moral morass for themselves and not judge anyone... but 3DS clearly does provide retro value for some people.
Oh, and my favorite retro experiences on the console so far have been Avenging Spirit and Donkey Kong - both games that I missed on the original GameBoy and never got around to picking up later.

Yeah I love my 3DS (as if that hasn't been obvious) and as far as being great for retro gamers I would have to agree. With the re-releases, 3D Classics, backwards compatibility and virtual console games I'd say there is a good amount of stuff for retro enthusiasts to enjoy.
