is it possable to add a battery to an NES tetris cartridge to keep the high scores on the cartridge.
was just thinking it would be nice to keep the high scores on there so we can compete against the high scores and such

I don't think so. And if there is a way, it's probably so hard that it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

but you really don't know.BoringSupreez wrote:I don't think so. And if there is a way, it's probably so hard that it wouldn't be worth the trouble.
It's an interesteing question for the likes of Hobie-wan or Ziggy who are very up on this sort of thing.
Re: Battery in Tetris cart
I can imagine that the cart is not designed with a separate ram space/chip that stores any highscore information so adding a battery would be useless. In fact, the high score data is probably all stored in the NES's own internal ram while the game is being run and so it is lost the moment the console is powered off or even reset I assume. This would mean that there would be nothing to save with a battery should you add one to the cart.

Re: Battery in Tetris cart
Just take a picture of your high score as proof.
Are you that good?
And no, this is not only difficult. It´s very near impossible. You´d probably have to built in a microcomputer into the cartridge. Perhaps in 15 years or so, just a guesstimation.
That or built something into the nes, like changing the ram to flashram or something, but that alone would not be enough. It would be cool if something like could be done though.

Re: Battery in Tetris cart
its not that im that good its the fact some one else is that makes me want to stride to be that good.....games with a goal are always fun but when the high scores are reset every time on power down its just kind of depressing and loose's that competative edge.d123456 wrote: Are you that good?
arcade machines are a good example of what i do like about the high score thing its like being the shizzle on your local shops astroids or centapede machine
interestng approach to that.....hmmm /scratches headdeathsled wrote:I can imagine that the cart is not designed with a separate ram space/chip that stores any highscore information so adding a battery would be useless. Re: Battery in Tetris cart
There's nothing inside the Tetris cart to add a battery to, there is no SRAM. Let's say you some how got Tetris running on a board with SRAM, even then, I think the ROM would have to be hacked.
So BoringSupreez was right. No, you can't add a battery to a Tetris cart to keep the high scores. And if there is a way, it WILL BE so hard that it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Re: Battery in Tetris cart
The game isn't programmed to save, so adding SRAM and a battery wouldn't help. You'd have to romhack it, then put it on a repro cart and install a fresh battery. No fun.

Re: Battery in Tetris cart
I was going to suggest maybe using that Mega Memory pack that floats around on ebay and Amazon. But from what it sounds like, it wouldn't work.
Re: Battery in Tetris cart
best way is probably a save state on a emulator?
