innovative and unique games for this console generation?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

innovative and unique games for this console generation?

Post by corn619 »

Where are all the unique, innovative and generation defining games of this console generation, you know games that say "now this is graphic and gameplay evolution". It seems game companies like to churn out yearly updates instead of true sequels. I personally would rather have more original IPs. I guess we have ourselves to blame because we keep buying this crap instead of taking a chance and buying original games. People seem comfortable with something familar and mediocre. I mean how many times can you play another Final Fantasy remake, any FPS, T. Clancy, Need for Speed, Burnout and Madden game with little to no changes at all. I mean I like a good FPS or sports game here and there but it seems they are spitting these games out left and right. I'm sick of this please tell me I'm not the only one that still enjoys great original content. I know downloadable content is the way to go for original games but I'm talking about full console experiences. If anyone can point out some good original and innovative console worthy games for the big three consoles let me know because I can only name a handful.

Gran Turismo 5 is revolutionary in graphics. Dont forget about all the new (somewhat inovated) shooters such as Haze, Timeshift, and Gears of War.

Exactly. Let's see...the Dreamcast was a home arcade Naomi board while the Wii has a beefed up GC inside it. The Dreamcast made advances in online capabilities while the Wii is sadly out of date. The Dreamcast had many true original games both from the arcade and others while the Wii has some great sequels to established franchises. The Dreamcast was not very popular while the Wii is incredibly popular. The Dreamcast broke new ground in almost every possible category while the Wii came up with one gimmicky advance. The Dreamcast library is full of titles for real hardass lifelong gamers while the Wii library is full of games for the family. And if the Wii achieves anything close to the amount of post-mortem cult status of the Dreamcast, I will eat my own turd.

It sounds like I'm ranting against the Wii (and I am a bit), but I'm just trying to say the Dreamcast can be more easily related to the 360 than the Wii.

And when exactly was the Dreamcast ever marketed to grandmothers and yoga instructors?

Edit: Sorry, I forgot to answer the original post. Yes it is difficult to find original games.

Gran Turismo hasn't changed since the first one came out in the 1990s outside of the graphics. Haze, Timeshift and Gears of War may have certain gimmicks to make them seem innovative, but when you played those games did they make you feel the same way SMB3, Final Fantasy IV, Street Fighter 2, Legend of Zelda or Sonic did when you first played them. I know I didn't get that same feeling, you know like I was playing something truly special. I think Gears of War is a terrific game "I won't comment on Haze or Timeshift" but it does not hold a candle when compared to the innovation of the past especially considering the limits of the tech back then compared to now.

Daaamn. Someone hates the Wii :P. I personally don't think the Wii is a bad console, just a misused and overrated one. I mean seriously the controller IS A GODDAMN LIGHTGUN. And there's what, 5 FPSs? I never got to try MP3 (my Wii died and I'm not really motivated to send it in for repair), but even if it's as good as everyone says it is it's just the diamond in a sea of ugly rocks. The one genre it could be EPIC at, is the one used least. I used to be a Nintendo fanboy but the direction they're going just doesn't interest me. Wii Fit? No thanks, I don't think Yoga is going to help me or most Americans. Mario Kart and the Wii Wheel? Either give me a racing wheel that has RESISTANCE, or a controller, not inbetween. And it's almost saddening to think the Dreamcast probably had better online support.

...Man, that wasn't intended to turn into a rant.

I used to pick up systems within a week of their release to experience the new and bold trends to be set. I was born in 1989 and for my 3rd birthday was given a sega genesis with 'Sonic the hedgehog' from my parents. Believe it or not i did beat it before my 4th birthday (where i received sonic the hegehog 2).
Since then I have yet to come across a console to capture my attention for as long as the Sega genesis did. I have beat halo on expert and havent touched it since then. I have conquered the majority of the final fantasies in every way imaginable. I have dominated all my friends in Smash bros. Brawl, and GTA 4 has lost its novelty (due to lack of gore, like the others...yes im a freak like that).
I must agree with Corn619: Nothing really seems to set the bar for both gameplay and audio/video experience. Their are definitely a pool full of novelty games. Where are the games of this generation that people are going to look back upon and say, "god damn, remember that?" and not for the novelty value.

Since the year 2000, I have been going back to my older systems to relive the exciting experiences of yester-year...whats happened?
