Gotta say, Sonic Spinball is a lot....slower than I'd thought it would be.
I hate the game. It's not a great Pinball game, and it's not a great platformer. It's a mixture of both, and both aspects of the game suck.
I can't let this go. Sonic Spinball is a phenomenal game, and easily in the top 6 or 7 Sonic games ever made. The controls are extremely responsive, the "pinball with boss fights" idea is executed exceptionally well, and the level design and artwork are on par with some of the best in the Sonic series. I don't understand how anyone who remotely likes pinball or 16-bit Sonic games could dislike it.
Playing this one right now on Sonic's Genesis Collection. Very fun.

As I already said, it emulates Pinball poorly, and it's platforming elements are also poor. The platforming elements do little to help the slow-moving Pinball. And the tables are terrible in the way everything is placed and mapped out. I'd much rather play a real video pinball game or a real Sonic game.

It's not supposed to emulate real pinball. You might as well criticize Crazy Taxi for not emulating real driving physics.

Also, you keep saying there are "platforming elements" - but that's really a stretch. Do you take issue with the way that he walks into the chutes that launch him into the table? Or rows his barrel through the sludge? There's very little if any genuine "platforming" in the game...

I don't get this either. Can you specify what's so bad about the layout?

It's nothing like any Pinball game I've ever played. It doesn't feel like Pinball at all.

not to mention that Sonic doesn't look like any hedgehog I've seen in real life!

I'm taking advantage of in-game saves with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on the PS3 with Sonic Spinball.

Has anyone ever beat the game?

Yeah, I beat it many times back when it was new. Some of the later levels are really fascinating (and tough). This thread is making me consider playing it through again :)
