Not that any of us (to my knowedge anyway) are cartridge preservation experts, but I don't see any reason my carts would stop working even in 50 years if they're taken care of. The batteries in games that save are the only thing that really degrades over time, and those are replaceable. Of course I'm terrified to actually open up a cartridge and try to replace a battery myself, but at some point it will become a necessary evil. That's when the cheapness of sports games will come in handy for lots of practice.BRIK wrote:I'm guessing maybe 40-50 years if their treated right. In my *cough* expert opinion anyway...

If only some company would come up with the idea of producing and selling new batteries for old carts. I'm sure it'll happen ~20 years from now when all our cart's batteries start dying out.
Re: The Nintendo Cartridge Market in General
Most carts use common off the shelf batteries. The difficulty is that they're soldered on to the board, so it takes a bit of technical know-how to replace them safely.GameMasterGuy wrote:If only some company would come up with the idea of producing and selling new batteries for old carts. Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the EA Sports games for SNES save on the cartridge, so those would be battery backed saves wouldn't they? I swear I see ten copies of Madden 95, NBA Live 95, and NHLPA 93 everytime I go to the store.fastbilly1 wrote:Most sports games do not have batteriesDonSilvestre wrote:That's when the cheapness of sports games will come in handy for lots of practice.

If they save on the cart they are battery backed. Doesn't stop Fast from being right, though. There are a LOT of sports games out there.DonSilvestre wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the EA Sports games for SNES save on the cartridge, so those would be battery backed saves wouldn't they? Re: The Nintendo Cartridge Market in General
I try to put in a battery holder if there's room, but yeah, batteries are standard, just with tabs. Less common to find ones with tabs, but not impossible.MrPopo wrote:Most carts use common off the shelf batteries. Interesting thread. I've noticed this trend as well. Also seems the PS1 market has kind of fallen off. Doesn't seem to be the same demand for those harder to find PS1 titles.

Maybe that has to do with all the PSone classics you can now buy off the PSN? I noticed they even have Japanese imports now... no Vib Ribbon sadly yet though
