Yeah it was always great seeing (and hearing) blood squirt out of people's neck.pvt_awol wrote:Where I think that Turok 1 was the most memorable for me, it featured BLOOD, and a lot of it. Crazy deaths when you would shoot a bad guy in the neck or something.

Ah yes.... but to counter:
This game wasn't really original. Nintendo FAILED with MK1 on the SNES, so subsequent releases were put back to normal to facilitate sales.
The N64 MK:Trilogy was just rehashes of those games. Nothing new. With Turok, we saw the blood and gore for the first time, and possibly (depending on how you look at it) more realistic and gory than what we had seen MK up until then. It was Nintendo making an original game that features gore that wasn't just put in there because the fans were mad that they got a crappy port. You know what I mean?

But Nintendo didn't make Turok. They didn't even publish it.
Nintendo hasn't fussed about gore since Mortal Kombat II came out because since then we've had the ESRB.

I started playing Turok 2, and it is a MUCH better gamed stages are well defined graphics are better, no stupid platforming, its such a huge improvement...BUT
I dont think I will continue to play this game, reason being that the stages are so huge you can easily get lost, and having unnamed portals does not help , u pop in one place and you show up in the other, with hidden secrets and searching around for items necessary to pass the level.
This system could work if it had a good map with coloring to show rooms that needs more exploring (like resident evil archives) and symbols to show you where are the main destinations are. I get confused between portals, save points and I dunno what else. I dont even know where to go to end a level.
Games that you have to research tutorials for to complete should not exist. Its not fun for each hour of playing you will need 15 min of online research between videos and FAQs just to locate items and find your way. This is a maze, not a game played for fun.
Still i can see how this game was mind blowing back in 1998 , as I much appreciate its graphics, gameplay, and atmosphere. I can be very wrong but it looks better than Goldeneye. If this wasnt a complex maze, it could be one of the best FPS of its era....I might give it another chance

Re: Turok problem
Yeah, I'll agree with you about Turok 2. That game should have had a really good map system, with markers and everything. The first level is pretty easy, but some of the later levels are just a nightmare to navigate! The other thing that pisses me off (now that you've mentioned portals I've remembered) is that you cannot leave a level once you enter it. In Turok 1, you can always leave the level. Whether you go back to the beginning or find the end portal, you can leave. In Turok 2, if you didn't complete the mission objectives and you go through the end portal it'll tell you that you've failed and send you back into the levels.
You might wanna check out Turok 3. From the videos I've watched, it seems more linear and less maze-like. You can save much more often, too. In contrast to Turok 2, some times you'd be playing for hours before you reach a save point. The only down side about Turok 3 is that it became a more traditional FPS in every other respect. It doesn't have the same kind of atmosphere the first two games had.

While its not a defining game for me on the N64, Turok series was hellish fun ifyou play with the cheats on
.
I think there is a nuke weapon in one of Turok game not sure which one though.
