FIX MY NES PLEASE

I know there is lots of topics regarding new 72 pin connectors and what not, but i cant seem to get the answers im looking for. I got a nes off a buddy that didn't read games any more so I figured it needed a new 72 pin connector. I replaced the connector, cleaned all contact points and the system is still being extremely temperamental, even more so then before. some games will not work at all and others will after some fiddling. the light no longer blinks, instead I just get a green screen. now that I look back I should of cleaned all games first before replacing the connector and I seem to have lost the original one. so im stuck with this extremely tight fitting connector that doesn't seem to work. could it be a faulty connector or have I installed it wrong?? I just want to play my god damn nes already

You did the right thing by attacking the connector first, but it could be a more serious problem on the board. How do the caps look? CRTGAMER posted a guide to looking them over here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 89#p475289

The green screen, I believe my NES had that. Mine is pretty temperamental too, and I have to make sure the games are not pushed in all the way and sometimes only halfway in. Check out that thread by CRT.

After you installed the new connector....do you push down when you put games in?
If yo do, don't do that. Just leave it up, the new connector is tight enough to read the games without being pushed down.

The game insert method makes sense, sometimes a game works up and not down on a new tight connector. Maybe the contacts of the new connector bend clear when a cart is pressed down? You can also fix the original connector by bending each pin slightly. The original connector worth fixing, sometimes after market connectors are not as solid. In addition, be sure the black plastic housing over the connector inside the NES is installed correctly, the tab has to go under the PCB. Since games sometimes work, it might not be the capacitor. On my NES capacitor fail the screen had a rolling fuzzy grey screen and a hum in the audio.

If it is getting a nice solid screen, that likely means there's a dirty connection on one or more pins. The lockout chip is connecting fine since it isn't going into a reset loop. But one of the others might not be making good contact. Clean everything and try without pushing down as noted.

thanks for the replies. ill pull everything apart and go to town on the contacts/pins with brasso and alcohol. i just push the games down to load them, i will try with them up because the connector is painfully tight, i feel like im going to break my nes every time i pull a game out. ill see how i go with the brasso, ive heard alcohol rub doesn't really get the grimy build up off.

Use Alcohol or Electrical Contact cleaner. Brasso gives a shine but leaves a polish coating. It is very hard to get all the white powder removed in between the springs of the contacts. The cart connector should not need cleaning since you recently replaced it, unless the game carts contaminated it. Are all the game cart contacts cleaned?

Try with the games up first. Also yes clean all your games as well just to be safe.

Also yeah like CRTGAMER said...never use Brasso.

Too late haha. I gave all contacts a scrub with brasso and an insane amount of filth came off them, then I went over them with rubbing alcohol (a few guides a have read said to do this to remove the residue that brasso leaves). I tried loading the games without clicking them down and they work first time every time! thanks for the help guys. much appreciated
