At times I just want to play games...I'm not very good most of the time at them but I still try anyway. Recently I'll download some roms and use emulators, but I feel either guilty or bored doing it that way & want the actual hardware/games. Now it would save me quite a bit amount of money just playing everything on my computer, but again it's just not the same.
Anyone have similar reservations or just avoid emulators all together?
What Is It With Emulation??

Re: Do you use emulators?
I use them both on my PC and on my original XBox. But I don't feel guilty at all doing it because I only download ROMs of games I actually own.

Re: Do you use emulators?
Yes, mainly for extremely rare games that I'll never own and/or for the Japanese-to-English translated ROMs. I also don't trust the batteries on all of my old cartridge games, so sometimes I'll emulate those even though I own a physical copy.
Lastly, DOSBox is absolutely necessary if you want to play any older PC games. And MAME is mandatory, unless you happen to own arcade machines or live near an arcade that happens to house all of your favorite games.

Re: What Is It With Emulation??
More of a money saver for me... I also think of it differently with systems/games I actually want to play, but it makes more sense to use an emulator for. A great example is the Game Gear; underrated system with games I want to play but does it actually make sense now to buy a Game Gear?
Re: What Is It With Emulation??
I really don't like playing games on the computer. I hate using a keyboard and mouse for games. Yeah I could buy a controller for it but that's money that could be going to a physical copy of a game that I want. I have used emulation in the past, pretty much for no good reason except to get an idea of how games are before I buy them. But I usually just prefer to find a video of the gameplay on Youtube or look at screenshots. Because playing it a little on the computer before I actually buy it is a bit of a buzzkill in my opinion.
Re: What Is It With Emulation??
I'm a huge fan of emulation. Sure I collect games and systems, and have enough to fill a whole room. But emulation? 2 words: Neo-Geo
Until I can afford to mortgage my house to buy all of the AES carts, or MVS ones with an arcade unit, I gotta stick with emulation. (MAME of course is a close second - no console version can match Killer Instinct arcade)

Re: Do you use emulators?
Unless you have an old PC lying around. I still prefer real hardware over DOSBOX. You're right about MAME though, because it's simply impractial to have that many machines at hand. But keeping an 8088, 386, and P1 running is no big deal. Kinda fun too.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Lastly, DOSBox is absolutely necessary if you want to play any older PC games.

Funny you brought up the Game Gear, as I get more enjoyment from emulating Game Gear games than playing the real thing. Same goes for Atari Lynx and any other old handheld with a poor battery life and/or no backlight.Icedawg wrote:More of a money saver for me...
