What would you do with the cart with the dead battery... throw it away?

Silver solder is fine as this isn't a delicate or high temp application. Unless you're regularly slam-dunking your carts it will be ok. :)

Considering that a good number of them might have dead batteries and they aren't being made anymore, yes. It isn't really much of an effort anyway. It would be a pointless waste. Stupid throwaway society. :x

Upgrade your clock to the up and coming 16-bit era.

At least we aren't using these:

Actually, judging by the circular logo, it seems very tempting...

I've got hoop dreams Hobie! I got em bad!
Seriously though, I totally agree it'll pass for this application. Personally I don't like the unleaded stuff though since it doesn't seem to wet as well and even successful joints appear crazed & inferior.

well I got the cart open and it's all covered in this powdery gunk. The battery looks all gross and corroded.

Is this sort of thing normal for a cart with a dead battery?

My camera isn't very good, but I took some pics:

Whee, I'd say the cart got wet or damp and the battery leaked out everywhere. Here's the Mario Kart that came into my possession that had gotten wet. You'll need to clean off all that crap. Hopefully there's just a little surface corrosion on the metal and no bad damage to anything. On that MK cart you can see that one of the diodes that was near the resistors disintegrated on me and I had to replace it. Get an old toothbrush and your contact cleaner/alcohol and carefully scrub off all the mess. Put it with a fan blowing on it for a while and get it completely dry, then have another look.

Really nice label for a cart that'd gotten wet if that's the case.

I'll get right on it.
