Yikes, it's genuinely hard to imagine a grindier game than DQI. I've heard that new party members start at level 1 in DQII though, so I can see how that could quickly multiply the amount of grinding. I think it'll be a while before I give DQII a runthrough, I'll just skip to III as I remember enjoying that one substantially more.MrPopo wrote:DQII manages to have more story points, but is even more grindy than DQ1. With DQ1 it was a series of one-on-one fights. With DQ2 it can be 3 vs. 8, and that's a lot of pain for them to dish to your party.Dylan wrote:I'm playing Dragon Warrior and it is the absolute grindiest grindathon I've ever ground. Besides fighting the Green Dragon literally the only thing I've done the entire game is grind to fight the next level of monsters, just so I can start grinding on those. It's somewhat interesting to practically experience one of the grandfathers of the genre, but in terms of playability the Dragon Warrior series has really progressed since this game.

Record of Lodoss War for Sega Dreamcast

Great anime inspired action-RPG with gameplay obviously influenced by Diablo and great looking cutscenes for Dreamcast.

Awesome Dungeon Crawl for DC,its really tough too so dont be discouraged if you have to tone down the difficulty to finish the game.BurningDoom wrote:Record of Lodoss War for Sega Dreamcast

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

So I put this down for a bit due to holidays/Golden Axe Warrior, but I've been playing through it quite a bit and am nearing what I assume is the end of Chapter 3. The game is long by my normal gaming standards - I've sunk 25+ hours in already and am anticipating 35-40 when all is said and done. Coming off Shining Force as my first tactical RPG, is quite complex! I'm enjoying the battles, though the story - while interesting and involved - is also a little bit confusing at points. The production qualities on the PSP version are top notch, though.o.pwuaioc wrote:How are you liking it?dsheinem wrote:Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
I am curious - where does LUCT rate in terms of difficulty and complexity compared to other games in the sub-genre?

About halfway through Pier Solar. Taking me forever...
Great game, but it further confirms that the jrpg genre with random battles isn't for me.

It is very high up there.dsheinem wrote:So I put this down for a bit due to holidays/Golden Axe Warrior, but I've been playing through it quite a bit and am nearing what I assume is the end of Chapter 3. The story in the PSP version isnt too tough for me to follow, I think the re-translation cleared it up. But the difficulty is definitely there, especially if you dont grind at all. I am a bit biased, but I think it is the best SRPG out there.
With SF being your only other SRPG experience, then yes this is definitely a difficulty and complexity ramp up. Though part of SFs charm is its simplicity and retro-ness lol. I am about 70 hours into my PSP TO playthrough and am in chapter 4. Lots of sidequests open up in Ch 4 and I love devouring all that content, so my playthrough will easily be 100+ hours.

I finally got my Earthbound Zero reproduction cart, so I've been playing that. It's...definitely an NES RPG.

Dragon Quest IV. It's so much fun, I can't remember the last time I played a game that I literally couldn't put down. Hard to believe there's three more on the DS for me to play after this.

Eternal Sonata. Chopin happens to be one of my favorite composers so this is excellent.
I don't think I'll ever finish Hyperdimension Neptunia or Ar Tonelico Qoga. Tired of them, I suppose.
And I played the FFXIII-2 demo earlier. I actually enjoyed it much more than I was expecting.

Oh hell yes. I LOVED Eternal Sonata. You got the PS3 version?
