just a quick question (sega genesis)

Post by harper »

Howdy, I just did that thing where you take a genesis rf adapter and an rca cable and make it into a composite cable for the genesis.
It seems to have worked out well, my genesis didn't explode or anything so that's a good sign.
My question is, is there any visual quality differences between the genesis model 1 and 2? Just wondering because I have the new cable I made in my genesis 2 and just thought it'd be cool to hook up my genny 1 to an RF to see the difference. But I just wasn't sure if they have the same visual quality to begin with to serve as a good comparison.
Also sadly I don't have 2 copies of one game to really notice the little differences but oh well. Hey, I saved like $7 by doing this. haha

I'm no Gen expert, but aside from the different designs of the models, I think everything is exactly the same.

I'm pretty sure the video chipset is the same in model 1 and 2. Also pretty sure that's the reason you can do the same s-video mod on model 1 and 2. The composite should look the same between different models.

If we're talking sound quality, that's a whole different story.

Yeah I knew the sound quality was different that's why I wondered about the video quality. At any rate I ran them side by side, one with rf and the other with the one I made and it made a huge difference.

Plus I have a model 1 genesis to 32x cable so I can use this on either model, as long as I don't have the 32x on the model 1 which I usually don't because it has pbc duty.

Every model 2 i find in town has the shitty video encoder with the white lines like the NES top loader :(

Haha I think I have the "stinker", quite honestly I don't play my genesis enough to notice or care about the sound quality. I was just worried about improving the video quality because genesis graphics already suck enough.

Nah. Dynamite Headdy would like a word with you. The way you're playing it sucks. Play in RGB (or component in the states like me) with NO mod work required.

Edit: Forgot to mention that was on the plasma. I have a CRT with components now and it looks even better than it.
What a maneuver!

Yeah you're probably right but it's ok I'm pretty happy with the work I've done.

The expression on my face, when I went from PAL, RF, mono sound and MD2 (one with crappy sound chip) to NTSC, RGB, stereo sound and MD1... it really is a divine experience, but slightly less so if you aren't from PAL-land.
