Buy choosing the 2D version you are sending the message that you prefer it over 3D. If you don't watch any version because it is in 3D, then that doesn't make the same impression on the studios. They look at the numbers, 2D vs 3D and for the last year or so 2D has always been outselling the 3D versions. The 3D used to FAR OUTSELL the 2D version right after Avatar and the glut of other movies came out.

The movie is also being shot (not filmed, it's all being done on video) at 48 frames per second as opposed to the standard 24. Not sure if 2D presentations will show the 48fps version or not.

I've heard that. I'm confused about it, though, because I thought they already shot the whole thing and 2 movies were already completed and in the can. If they were already done, how could there be 3 movies? Maybe the Simirilion, or one of the books written by Tolkein's son? (Wishful thinking)

I believe they are using Simirilion.

They don't have the rights to use any of the Silmarillion stuff.

As for there not being enough material? They had enough extra material to extend the theatrical LOTR movies by a total of a good 2 hours or so, and they still had a ton of stuff left out of THAT. I'm sure there's plenty of material already shot for 3 movies if that's what they're deciding to do. Plus I'm pretty sure that they'll be calling actors back to shoot extra stuff.

^This.

And "this" could have, or already have changed, but the word would be on the street so to speak.

Jackson is all about three part arcs. And although I don't see a sophomore slump, but man, trumping LOTR is nearly impossible in my eyes. I feel the entire story has been told, and although The Hobbit is not an afterthought in my mind, I feel the LOTR series filled us in on what we needed to know.

But yup, you bet your bippy my ass will be in the theater when these are released.
