What to do with Seaman?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What to do with Seaman?

Post by Scooter »

I started the game once and killed my little critters off because I didn't manage their food stocks well enough and they starved to death. I started a new batch and they are doing fine, the surley little nits. Problem is, the week after next I'm going on vacation for a week. This leaves me with a few choices:

1. take the Dreamcast with me and keep up with the critters.
2. let them croak (pun intended), it's only a game. (But I hate being scolded by Nimoy.)

If I take them with me, the wife will likely witness me talking to a video game creature and she's already concerned about my sanity. If I let them croak, I'll have to start over with new eggs (the current critters are nearly 2 months old) or abandon the game altogether. I wish there was a "vacation" button on the game which would cryo-freeze the critters while you take a hiatus from the game for a while.

I suppose I could hire that hot neighbor girl to feed them while I'm gone, but they'd probably decide to leave me and move in with her while I was gone and I'd come home to an empty house. I also don't think it would go over well if I told the wife I was leaving my Seamen with the neighbor girl.

I realize you are mostly joking (right?) but the idea of hiring a "sitter" for your virtual pet is definitively amusing. I bet it wouldn't be the first time this was done, either (although, maybe the first time for Seaman :P ).

Anyway, I haven't "played" Seaman at all, but I have to agree any games of this sort should have a mode to suspend everything. Whoever thinks this lowers the "realism" of virtual pets (or whatever) can just opt out of using the option, while leaving everyone else the choice to use it when it is needed.

Wait, you've still got a group of Seamen that are two months old?

Don't they start to thin out after about a week?

Well, I'm down to two frog shaped things right now, it's actually probably only been about 6 weeks, they'll be about 2 months old when I leave on vacation.

I started out with a group of egg-things, they evolved into fish-like things that killed off each other and the ranks got down to two. When only one remained, he crawled out of the water and laid some more eggs. Those became tadpoles which again preyed on each other which has left me with two frogmen which is where I currently stand.

Hire someone to come in and feed them and pet sit. This would be hilarious just to see the look on the girls face when you were explaining how to keep your "pets" in good health.

You could just adjust your DC's clock and set it back a week upon your return. It'll be like you never left.

I read somewhere that it's not possible to trick the game by doing that though I've never really tried it myself.

I've done it by setting the clock forward. Worked fine for me.

And after a little more research I found out that they have evolved as far as they are going to. I guess I've gotten all there is to get out of the game anyway.
