Well, the cruel thing is that toy companies went through bankruptcy and mergers throughout the late 80's and early 90's: Kenner, makers of Star Wars figures and M.A.S.K., and Tonka, makers of Go-bots were bought out by Hasbro (fyi, check the company logos on Beast Wars, it was Kenner not Hasbro -> didn't want to anger TF fans I guess!).

It wasn't limited in the US, as Japan had companies failed and merged, Takara absorbed several smaller companies before merging with Tomy; Bandai mergre with Namco.

Here's a good place to ID your toys:

Actually, not all of them even transformed into vehicles. Throughout the series, flashbacks have been made to those that turned into weapons, tools... heck, in the pilot to the original cartoon, Soundwave (the spy who turned into a radio) disguised himself as a lamp post.
Yeah but that was Soundwave's Cybertron mode, they were all kinda weird:

Take Convoy/Prime's for example:

See the Dino-Riders of the 80s/90s and the Toys 'R Us T-Rex Toys of today.

Yeah, but the weird modes made sense because they "worked" as they reinforced "sneaky robot bastards".
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

See the problem here is you are looking at the ToysRUs Dinorider knockoff, look at the Fischer Price ones:

Not only do they have Dinoriders, they also have Powerloaders:
