though to be fair Stolar overruled his Japanese superiors by pricing the Dreamcast for launch at $199. Reportedly, Sega wanted to set the price at $249 to generate profits immediately. The launch of the Dreamcast was the most successful commercial console launch in the history of gaming selling over US$300mln of hardware and software in its first week of launch. Stolar's decisions eventually led to his dismissal from Sega. So he did do that, plus some of the decisions he made when first working for the company were the same things he did when working for Sony, and they worked for them. Personally I think it was a smart decision for Sega to hire him. He was honest. He know the Saturn was screwed and was not there future and was honest enough to admit it.flojocabron wrote:If I ran sega I wouln't have hired this guy!
He tried to do what was best for us and prevented some games from reaching our shores. He wasnt a total fuck-up, but he didnt do anything to help the fanbase.
There's an old thread here about him too and a youtube vid that talks more about him.

I think if the Sega CD had less FMV games, it could've been more successful.

The Sega CD was successful anyway though...swiftzx wrote:I think if the Sega CD had less FMV games, it could've been more successful.

If I were the head of Sega, the 32x would have been released later, and would have powers equivalent to that of the PS1. Instead of the Saturn, I would condense the Genesis, SCD, and 32x all into one model, but people with the three separately could still use them to play the next generation of games.

That makes no sense. A low percentage (somewhere like less than 25%) of the library contain FMV games. It's not the games. It's the way it was marketed in the US. That's why those types of games come to mind to a lot of people immediately when they think of 'Sega CD'. FMV was looked at as the next big thing here. If it was marketed otherwise (I don't even think there was a Sonic CD commercial let alone one for any of the better games. The only commercials I've seen was of the add-on and typically contained footage of Joe Montana Football CD, Night Trap, etc) this wouldn't be the case. The wrong type of games were pushed/supported. If you really look at it, the numerical presence of FMV games in the library is insignificant.swiftzx wrote:I think if the Sega CD had less FMV games, it could've been more successful.

I would make the Sega Saturn less complicated hardware wise. I would use a single more advanced CPU, possibly still keep 2 GPU's bet defiantly have better developer support software and possible more advanced GPU's, and Defiantly keep the Yamaha sound processor as the Saturn easily had the best sound out of all the 5th generation consoles. Kicks the PS1 sound easily.

While I don't disagree, FMV games weren't just a Sega CD thing. "Multimedia" in general was being pushed, and for the time period that meant a lot of grainy video being forced in everywhere. In retrospect, it wasn't a great focus...but it made sense at the time I'm sure.arnold_the_bartender wrote:The wrong type of games were pushed/supported. On a separate note, pushing the Jaguar development away from the overcomplicated CPU setup that it had might have helped things. It still may not have had the developer support, but it would have had a better chance if it was easier to harness the power of the thing.

There is absolutely no fucking way that Subterannean was produced on the Yamaha chip. That is definitely direct audio. If it is then that is one of the finest emulations of a distorted guitar I've ever heard even better than some £5000+ nord synths.ATARI800XLfan wrote:I would make the Sega Saturn less complicated hardware wise. Also, does anybody else get massive Faith No More vibes from that tune? I think the composer must have been a huge FNM fan.
